Im running a 408w with Pro Topline heads. 2.08 valves, 215cc intake runners. Alot of people dont like pro topline but I have had a few sets and they work great for me.

Midohasp thanks I was thinking the same thing.. I really don't want to change cam.. my source was Reg at backdraft.. i would like around 425-450 at rear wheels..

SBF heads
From a dyno/tuning, first-person-experience perspective, here's my opinion...
Most popular bang/buck on an average engine? The AFR heads. Which one? Depends on the displacement, cam, and intended use. Smaller ports work better in smaller rpm and smaller power ranges with smaller cams. There's more to the answer than just peak power unless it's all about the peak dyno number to you. For a 370+" SBF, I'd buy the 205's if it was my own engine and AFR was the best head available...which it isn't. The best SBF head from a power perspective, is the new Jon Kaase SBF heads. http://www.jonkaaseracingengines.com...aseJegsSBF.htm For those of you that don't know Mr. Kaase's work, he's won various engine master challenges several years running. This head out performs anything I've seen to date; and I've seen all the above mentioned heads, as well as even some DOHC heads and even a set of rotary valve heads. These new heads from Kaase are incredible. I witnessed a 331" small block ford with a TFS intake and a cam designed by Hi-Tech Motorsports produce 414 rear wheel horsepower at 7200rpm measured on a dynojet 248 ON PUMP GAS with 28deg total advance, and a 13:1 Air/Fuel ratio, no power adders. It's a 10.3:1 CR engine. I've never seen that before. He recently swapped heads from a set of AFR 185s to these. It made 357rwhp with the AFRs...nearly 60rwhp less! |
AFR 205's on a 392
Contact the folks at Ad Performance they will tell you the best head for your application. Yes 205 heads would work much better on a 392 than the 185, thats why it would be good idea to talk to a teck. Give them all your info, pistons & specks and wether you are running a power adder? will make a big difference in head selection also. Just checked the Jegs.com website, and the Roush 200's are currently going for about $1100 per set assembled. Not quite as good a deal as they used to be. Lately, I've been reading where the AFR's are one of the better heads out there. The price on my 393 when it was build a few years ago were only about $900 complete. That was a great deal, but the economies of scale have dropped on them now. I may go with a set of AFR 185's on my 289 build for my GT40 engine. Jim |
i dont have a cobra... but you guys really seem to know your stuff and i really need some help on making some decisions. I have a 1968 mustang GT convertible that im restoring. its about to go to the body shop in a week and we all know what comes after the car leaves, the engine. I currently have a 302 and a performer rpm intake and a crane hyrdraulic cam and everything else is pretty much stock. i am intrested in the f.a.s.t. mp dfi kit that they have. has anyone heard of that or know someone who has it? also, i am intrested in the Jeg's/Kaase SB-Ford Cylinder Heads thanks to BryonRace. would i need the 185cc or the 205's? My overall goal is to make in the ballpark of 10-15mpg and around 400-425 hp. i was thinking of going w/ the roller rockers and roller cam from comp cams. If anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated!

AFR 185- 205 Heads on a 289
AFR 165 Heads would be a much better choice for your application. The other heads will be to big for your 289. To much chamber volume will kill your low end tourqe on a smaller CI Motor. read the 302

For the larger strokers like the 392C.I. engine being discussed in such a light car the AFR 205 or a Victor JR stage 2 head would work best. Do not try and save 300.00 to 400.00 dollars and be sorry later. We do all of own CNC work in house and can provide you with some of the best heads on the market with up-graded springs, spring cups, 10 degree retainers and 10 degree locks with 7/16 rocker studs. The 205 AFRs we normally sell for 1745.00 but would sell the Club Cobra members the heads for 1649.00 with the springs for hydraulic roller or flat-tappet. These heads come with parts list, spring pressure and assemble heights. Plus we know a little bit about 351 strokers and would be happy to help you with your set up for max power. We dyno test and tune about 6 to 8 of these a month. Thanks, Keith Craft

Keith, while you're into this, please give us your opinion on the Kaase SBF heads on a 393W or larger hydraulic roller cam warm/hot street motor, typical of what we see here. These things look hot. Cleveland style canted 2.10/1.60 valves, standard valvetrain, intake and exhaust bolts up (unlike Sportsman, or R heads that need a custom set of headers).

I had my eye on the Kasse heads before they were posted on his website. With a big inch Windsor they sound like a very good option. They appear to tilt the valve stems inward instead of at a polyangle such as the Boss style head. However in my case without the cubic inches to keep the port velocity up they would not work well. But you can bet there has been some serious time spent on R&D. They look to be a real good option for stroker motors. I have not seen these new heads yet myself. I feel that the standard wedge head design is by far the most price conscious way to go for most people. If a guy does not mind spending a little more on heads, headers, intake and valvetrain parts these would be a great way to go. Right now there area lot of the NASCAR Yates heads and valvetrain floating around at a great price that would make some real good power for sure.

Do you come across any used, complete SC1 heads? How would they work on a large, street/roadrace engine with a pump gas compression ratio and what rpm would I have to turn it? Thanks. Scott |
