289 stroker?
Whats the most a 289 block could be stoked too without getting the piston pin into the oil ring area, i theres problems when stroking a 302 - 347 and a shorter rod has to be used.

You can stroke a 289 just as you would a 302 safely to a 347 with no problem at all. Get the book on How To Build BIG- INCH Small Blocks by George Reid. The book lists around ten different co's with stroker kits.

The books I have read advise you not to stroke a 289 very far due to the fact that the cylinder skirts don't extend down as far as a 302 does. You could get lots of slap by doing that.

I second that. I have the book by George Reid and the skirt issue is addressed there.

Not only that, but the best thing about the 289 is it's ability to handle high RPM's due to it's short stroke. Personally, I'd track down a 302 block (Very plentiful) and stroke it before I'd do a 289. Save the 289 block & crank for a screamer.

I looked into this when I had a 63 Fairlane sports coupe. I found a 1965 289 block and considered stroking it. I talked to about 4 engine builders and they all agreed to leave it alone. The skirts are too short. I agree with tpiini about leaving it stock (maybe a thin bore) and making a high RPM screamer out of it. Get a newer 302 and make your 347 if that's what you want to do.
