5 bolt vs. 6 bolt 289's

Nedsel or anyone else:

Did all original 289 Cobras come with the early 5-bolt 289's or did some of the later cars come with 6-bolt blocks?

I have always assumed that only 5-bolt blocks were used, but have never found confirmation of this fact.

Thanks

Mike

If history serves me correctly...

The 260, and then 289 Cobras were made in '62, '63, and '64. In '65, the 427's came out, and the 289's were history.

The 289 motors from Ford were 5 bolt bellhousings through the '65 model year. In '66, they changed to 6 bolt, and have remained so ever since.

It would seem, therefore, that original 289's all had 5 bolt bellhousing motors.

But that was 40 years ago. Might you find a '66 or later motor in a 289 car today? Probably, but it's doubtful that it would be the original motor.

Mike;
I believe the 289 was a 5 bolt through late '64 and changed to 6 bolt for '65 through '67, when it was replaced by the 302. Unless you're a stickler for correctness you may be happier with a 6 bolt as it tended to be smoother and quieter.
