Need Opinions (and specs)
I have a friend who works at a NAPA warehouse around here who is able to get me half price on any crated engine that they sell. After looking on the NAPA website and selecting a few different engines for my kit, I decided that I wanted to go with either the '69 Ford 5.0L 302 CID V8 .... OR .... the '70 Ford 5.8L 351 CID V8.
The specs I could find online said that the 302 pushes 400 horsies at 6,500 rpm and that the 351 gets 290 with the 4 barrel carb. Does anyone know if these are accurate specs and more so, what would everyone suggest as far as one of these engines goes? I can get the 302 in a crate delivered to my doorstep for around $500 and the 351 for around $600. Eventually, I plan to do some major modifications to the engine, i.e. bore it out and add performance parts. Is one of these engines better to modify than the other? Just looking for some advice, thanks! ~ Nick |
If you can get just a replacement short block 351W, buy your motor that way. Then put the good cam and heads on it. Otherwise, just get the whole motor for $600, and sell the cam and heads.
Anyone that tells you that they can push 400 horsies out of a stock 302, and sell it to you for $500, is smoking funny cigarettes! OK? So now it's a no-brainer. |
I completely agree with Jack. A warmed up 302 will give you 350HP..and although it'll be a nice engine a 351 with decent heads, cam and carb setup will easily break the 400 horse mark...with a lot more torque than the 302 will give you....and more torque with your HP is where it's at!

Go with the 351 W, cost about the same but the 351 will be easier ( cheaper ) to add HP later. Wished I had gone with the 351.

Awesome. Thanks all!

Don't skimp on the powerplant, thats what these cars are all about!
I agree with all of the above, get a good cam, good heads, and a good intake/carb and your set. I would go with the 351. |
