351W Vibration....:(
Hey folks looking for some feedback...
I have a 69 351W rebuilt and balanced. Street Dampener externally balanced 28oz, Brand new Ford Motorsport 28oz flywheel. King Cobra Clutch Kit. New T3550. Anyways have a vibration that comes in @ 1500 RPM or so and seems to clear up around 2200 RPM..... also under acceleration there is somewhat of a vibration under load.... One more thing is it grinds when heading into reverse, I have to put it into 1st thru 4th first to get it to not grind... I have already put the car up on stands and stepped down on the clutch and it is disengaging (the wheels do not turn while in 1st). I am beginning to think the pilot bearing is going south and or the bellhousing is misaligned... Thanks in advance. Steve |
I have a 69 351w also. I have the same vibration. Mines about 1800 rpm to 2300 rpm. I bought mine used. It was rebuilt with 3000 miles on it when I got it. I have no specs on the motor so it would be interesting to find out whats causing the vibration. I have an old duel point distributor that I thought might be causing the problem. Jim

I don't believe your problems are in the engine but, rather, in the drivetrain somewhere. It could be the bellhousing or clutch alignment, driveshaft, loose motormount, etc.
Also there are no syncros in reverse. I always go to third and then to reverse to eliminate any grinding. Roscoe |
My first transmission lasted 760 miles in the car. Don't use an older t-5. Still have the vibration with the new one. Clutch in or out, neutral or in any gear still vibrates! Jim

Did you align your bellhousing when you installed it? Did you use a clutch alignment tool? Is the driveshaft balanced?

Q: What is that vibration I feel around 1800-2000 RPM? A: This problem is an unbalanced driveshaft. Most people with the problem feel it at its worst between speeds of 90 and 120 MPH. Others claim they can also feel it by slowly bringing the RPMs up to the 1800-2000 range with the car in park or neutral. But that isn't necessarily the same problem. Some even start to feel it as low as 60 MPH. It usually starts with a mild resonating vibration you can feel through the gas pedal. Then in at 80 - 90 MPH, the vibration intensified and feels as though it's coming from the center of the car. |
I was just reading through that tech answer....how could you feel a driveshaft balance with the car in park?

Re-read the answer and look at the sentence after the park/neutral comment...."But that isn't necessarily the same problem. ".....
I am not saying that the driveshaft is THE problem. I AM saying that it could be a number of things. Before I look at the engine I would look at the bellhousing, clutch and driveshaft. If any of these are misaligned they can cause damage to the trans, pilot bearing, etc. |
My bad....my brain must have skipped that sentence....I was just sitting here wondering how in the world could you test a driveshaft balance sitting still?

What you will see alot with the standard shift cars is that the prssure plate was not balanced with the flywheel. If the holes in the flywheel are of the least amount or the prssure plate is of a little you will get this problem. I saw this a few times on my race car and started balancing the pressure plate when I balanced the flywheel. You think stamp where you had it bolted on so you can bolt it on in the same place when you install in the car. You can also mark it and then take it of and rotate it and bolt it in a different place and it may cure the problem. Good luck, Keith Craft
