289/302 FIA Air Cleaner for Carb
What are you guys using on your small block carburated cars?
I don't really like the cast oval air cleaners nor do I want to commit to 14" of chrome real estate either.

I have a "Cobra" hi riser, a 715 Lemans Carb and the 14 inch "hipo" air cleaner going on my car. I too have had the same dilema. I ultimately went with the period correct look.

Sounds good. How is the Le Mans carb working for you? I was thinking about that carb but think it might be too big for my 289

My engine is still being built. My motor is a '69 boss 302 block (with the 4 bolt mains) and race prepped Edelbrock heads (painted black and detailed to look cast iron) (331 stroker). We anticipate is will have 450-475 hp so the carb will be appropriate for my application. If the old school carb is too much of a pain, I may switch over to a Holley 650 DP and will use the Lemans Bowls on the carb from the 715, so it will still look like the 715 carb.

That would make sense.
Using the calculator CID X RPM % 3456 I show that a 500CFM carb would be sufficient for my application. With a carb up over 700 cfm I would be afraid that I wouldn't be able to pull open the Vacuum secondaries. I'm leaning towards the 600 dp.

13 incg Ford Motorsports with a blue Accel filter so they match the blue Ford spark plug wires.

The 715 Vacuum secondary carb works great on a 289. That's what was on the 65/66 GT350's. Vey streetable and good throttle response too. If you use those float bowls on a DP 600 or 650 you will need to drill a couple of passages in the bowls since originally they only used one accelerator pump. I have one on the shelf but I am reluctant to put it back on since I have my 650 DP dialed in. The Lemans bowls will not permit any sort of drop down air cleaner housing. Consequently you housing choices are somewhat limited when combined with potential hood clearance.

I really like the looks of the le mans carb but unless I can pic one up really cheap right now I'll probably pick up a 600 dp since they are a dime a dozen & rebuild it. For the long term I may look to the Le Mans as an alternative, that is if I don't choose to upgrade to webbers;) who knows!:cool:

New Lemans bowls can be purchased. I'm pretty sure you can buy new ones for about $100 a set. With a little modification, you can make your carb look like the 715 and save some $

T.P. I use the dp 600 on my 351w, with the hi po air cleaner. Good results with this carb.

Thanks Joe. I really like the 600 DP. Had one on my last car with good results. I'm pretty sure this is the route I will go. What diameter is your air cleaner?
Where did you purchase it?
