Main bolts vs. studs

Hi guys,

I'm wondering whether I should be using bolts or studs for my 351w mains. It's my understanding that the main advantage of studs is that they're better if you plan to open the motor up frequently. Do I have that right? I don't plan to be unbuttoning the bottom much, if ever. Also I see from ARP's specs that their studs are slightly higher in tensile strength than the bolts. Is there anything else I need to know?

I use studs everywhere I can.

Generally the tensile strength is a little higher....plus you lose the stress concentration of a bolt head.

In my opinion, it's also easier to use a stud versus a bolt....i.e. oil pan studs....

I used studs on the bottom end for strength. I used bolts on the top end because on some installations there is not enough room in the engine bay to pull the heads if you use studs. This forces you to pull or lift the motor to remove a head.

I'm using studs with main girdle in my 408w ;)

Bolts stress the threads, on the bolt and in the block, when they are secured. Studs move the stress to the studs.

Studs are better, although not always necessary.

Also, ARP just intruduced a stud with a hew broached into the end so you can pull the stud to get the heads off, instead of pulling the engine.

One of those simple things that make a lot of sense.
