351 windsor oil filter question
This may seem like a silly question but is the center port of the filter the oil in or oil out. My theory is that the oil comes from the pump to the filter via the center port and then returns to the engine through the side port. Just wanted to be sure..

Oil flows from the outside in. Get that wrong and you'll have great oil pressure (due to the check valve) but zero flow.

The reverse is correct. The oil flows into the engine through the center hole.

WELL, which is it? You got two responses and two different answers. I was always under the impression that it pumped into the center hole and returned through the outside holes. But recently read somewhere that the opposite is true.
We need a "For Sure" answer.

I think they were both saying the same thing, differently.:)
Oil is pumped into the filter via the outside holes.Into the engine oil galleries from the large center hole.
When you cut open a filter to check for metals, you look at the outside pleats.

What do you think that round piece of rubber under the outside holes will do if the oil goes in through the center?

I reread the posts and every is A-OK. When I read the first sentence of Woodz428 where he said, "The reverse is correct.", I thought he was answering strictlypersonl .
Lesson learned! :o
Thanks, Ralph :MECOOL:

Sorry for the confusion, I was responding to AMiller when the other post came in. I was stating the same as what strictlypersonl had posted.
