351 W Temp

What Temp does your 351W run in your cobra sitting in traffic in the summer?

Bob In Ct 04-10-2006 07:37 PM

SPF, 190 degrees. Holley 750, dual plane, built by HRE on Long Island.

I was out last week on an interstate and got stuck behind a big wreck for about 45 minutes. Engine stayed around 180 for half hour and then went to 190 for the last 15 minutes but was stable and not climbing.

I've got a newly rebuilt engine in the car, 40 over, afr heads. Afco alum radiator 26 x 19, -16 AN radiator hose, edelbrock alum water pump.

351W temp

My engine sits on 80*C/176*F no matter what the ambient temperature.
I have driven it with an ambient of 45*C/113*F never over heated.
Cheers,
Bryan

My 351 is now a 418 and in hot weather idling in traffic it has gotten to 205degrees but as soon as the Cobra gets moving it comes back down to around 185!!

Speedysnake 04-11-2006 08:31 AM

My 351 "crate" will hold at ~ 190 F. for as long as I've ever had it in traffic, and as soon as I get moving it cools down to ~ 175 F. & the fans shut down.

wtm442 04-11-2006 08:31 AM

80 C when moving, 95 C if stuck in stop and go traffic

RedBarchetta 04-11-2006 09:19 AM

My RDI 392 stroker will easily hold 185-190 in light traffic. In heavy traffic it wants to wander around 200-205, but the dual fans kick in and bring it down to the 190-195 level quite quickly. I also tickle the manual override switch on the fans if I know I'm going to be sitting at a long light....I rarely wait for the thermostat to do the job for me.

My car is a little over year old. Temp used to be a steady 190 or so. Recently, I noticed it eases up to 210, backs down to 190. Doesn't make much difference what speed of whether fans are on. I replaced thermostat with the same one (192 degree) and it now it's 185, but still eases up to 210 and back down to 185. Don't know why. Maybe that's the way thermostat is supposed to work. Wondering what temp will be like when weather gets hot.

200 if I have to sit for a while but nothing higher. Run around 180 normally.

bstandley1 04-11-2006 01:21 PM

210 sitting in traffic with the fans on (16" Spal thin line + two 9" pushers), 180 when moving

Hi guys,

I have a 160 degree thermostat and it runs at 185 cruising and swings up to 200 at idle or in traffic....then fans sequence on and off as needed.

Does not matter what the ambient temp is or if the A/C is running ----- This engine is in my Daytona coupe.

No Problemo!

Almost always right at 200F, HO 351W SVO. I switch manual fan on when I start the engine, no matter what the ambient temp. Thinking about replacing the 50% coolant/water with 100% distilled water and a pump lubricant. Was also contemplating installing an oil cooler but probably won't unless the temps go higher.
I talked to several old Hot Rodders (60's era but still involved) and they say not to worry if it stays in that range, which was really my thought before talking to them.

WaterWetter dropped my temp about 8 degrees. Check out their website at redlineoil.com. It's a pretty good video.
