Thermostat temp
Hi,
Are you running a 160* or 180* thermostat in your small block and why? Thanks, Perry.:MECOOL: |
Its not what you stat. use, it is what is the temp. with a corisponding stat.

180 degree balanced Thermostat (Robert Shaw) in the cooling currently, strongly considering stepping up to 195 since it really seems to run around 160 degrees on the road. I have the Oil cooler blocked in front but I do not have thermostat on oiling sytem with the cooler. It has a Fluidyne Shelby spec radiator. From what I understand they (Shelby) use the same unit for FIA or 427 models so it seems likely that it could be overcooling with the additional cooling capacity (BTU rejection) (?) I may try restricting the water flow too?

160 in the summer because of the traffic that I have to deal with from day to day, and a 180 during the cooler months.

I have a 180 thermostat in my 351W. I have a manual over-ride for my electric fan so I can turn it on any time I want which I usually do when stuck in traffic or if I am approaching traffic lights after running at highway speeds. By turning on the fan early, I don't have to wait for the engine to get hot enough for the fan to come on.
My Johnex is set up with an electric water pump and an aluminium rad. No over heating problems so far. :p :) By the way, I really like the electric water pump as I can cool the engine after shutting it down simply by turning the key back to "on" and turning on the fan. Works great. :3DSMILE: Wayne |
Wayne,
Nice point that you brought up (after cool) with your electric water pump. I might need to try one out some time. Much draw on the amps? I'm curetnly running a 180 with dual fans/alum radiator and a manual switch. Stays between 175 and 190 however it does move a lot in this range (strange). John |

I don't remember the exact draw but it is about the same as an electric fan, about 3 amps, I think. The really nice thing is that it pumps full volume even when the engine is idling. Also the pump isn't spinning at a rediculous level when the engine is being reved to the limit. Nice even coolant flow all the time. The front of the engine looks very neat and clean with just one very short belt to run the alternator. The initial cost is a little bit expensive but no regrets. Wayne |
