More HP

Just wounded what the general feeling was on getting more HP.I have a crate 351, 385 HP, and would like a little more hp, I have a $2500 to spend and want to spend it wisely.Porting the heads has been metioned, replacing the heads, blower which for some reason I lean away from, stroker kit?

Depends on what heads you have but my opnion would be stroke to 408 and porting.

Biggest bang for the bucks spent:

1) Dyno Tune
2) Get rid of restrictive side exhaust
3) Higher numerical rear gears
4) Nitrous
5) Head/Cam work

Power comes from your top end. Heads and cam.

I would have head work done....and change the cam.

More Ponies

Heads, Keith Craft / Edelbrock

cam and intake, recommended by Keith Craft

gears, tires, dyno tune

408 stroker kit are $1700 + - but it will take about $7000 to $8000 total to build the motor. If you have the water pump, oil pan, distributor, MSD, etc you can save a few bucks.

It all depends on your usage and the level of your mechanical ability. The path I'm taking light chassis foremost. The engine will be a roller 96 block that the level of machine work will depend on the damage I find from a broken piston. the rotating assembly will be a 3.85 stroker which at 30 over produces a 392 composed of rebuilt and beam polished 351 rods, and 302 forged pistons. The heads will probably be Twisted wedge CNC 205s and use a fairly aggressive cam. This should result in around 500+ hp and I assure you I will have nowhere near 7k in it. I personally would not go bigger than this with a 351 since you start to get into expensive machine work and the rod/stroke ratio degenerates.

Heads, Cam, and a 150 shot of spray. I would do AFR 185's 58cc from Ed Curtis and get a custom cam from him. Go to the dyno and tune it all.
