Superchargers I have a ford 2005 351w crate engine, 385 hp, and want to put a supercharger on it, any ideas of a good supercharger that fits well with this engine, are they easy to install and how much do they cost approx. Appriciate any feed back. cheers Tonyd:) |

Tony, Paxton is a reasonable choice for carbuerated 351 Windsors... The Shelby 350GT Mustang in 1969 I believe has one from the factory. Anyway, they sell a "universal" 351 kit with a Novi 1200 model supercharger plus the pressure box that is pretty much like that original mustang unit. Good for 6-7 psi boost, probably get you 75 or more HP. Thats a centrifugal model. The "roots" type blowers are similar but take up a lot of height so hood mods might be necessary. Weiand makes one that is for the 302 but will fit a 351 with an adapter for the manifold that you get somewhere else. I have no personal experience with this, this is just info I get from reading about this stuff. Good Luck, sounds cool. = Sean = |

Oh, price for most of these units is in $2500 range. |

A pro-charger or a vortech are both good. you should get a 30-40 % increase in power....make sure your internals are of good quality....... |

With 9:1 you will have no problem running 8-10 lbs of bbost, just get a timing controller. The Paxton kit would be my choice. Justin |

been there done that... Call Craig Conley at Paradise Wheels in California. He will be most helpful and give good advice. I had a 60s era Paxton ball drive Paxton updated to VR4 racing specs on my SPF and 351 W with about 9-10 pounds of boost. The blower was fine but my engine blew ; due to wrong metal pistons, too high compression and too much boost for the engine internals. The engine was not what it had been represented to be when I bought it and I should have torn into it to see what it really was before i added the blower The sound of that Paxton as it spooled up was outstanding, as was the kick when it threw you to the back of the seat on WOT hits to the accelerator pedal. Alas, after 3000 mi the engine blew and I decided to not have a blower on the new one. Costs. it aint cheap : $2500-3000 for the blower. Requires a blower friendly rebuilt carb to handle the boost. Custom bracketry most likely needed. a tight fit under the spf hood for routing of air intake hoses, especially over the valve covers. Special MSD ignition needed that retards the spark as the boost goes up, it must not get lean or whammo bammo- gotta keep the air to fuel ratio fat/rich for insurance. High output fuel pressure needed if ya dont have it . Other items perhaps unique to your engine install...like I had to relocate the remote oil filter so it would clear the blower pulley, had to get a different crank pulley, yadda yadda. all said and done you can kiss $4-5K goodbye. lots of eyeball though and lots of fun, AS LONG AS YOUR ENGINE INTERNALS ARE SPECIFIC TO BEING BLOWER FRIENDLY. See pics in my photo gallery, damn - I miss the looks and sound and kick of that blower . At the time the engine blew i had some pressing time committments for car events and opted to replace it with a crate motor vs a rebuild as i could be back on the road in one week vs several weeks-thus being able to attend my pre planned events. There are some other blowers now on the market that might also have some 'ready to bolt on' 351w installation kits . If the kits will work on your engine and bay. mine had to be custom made except for one bracket from a 289/302 install kit that would work- several other brackets and spacers ( alternator had to be moved out from the engine to clear the blower pulley) .Other spacers/brackets had to be custom fit/made for me, all adding to the cost of install. Good luck...and enjoy...but consider the total cost vs updgrading engine for what is the best bang for the buck for you ...Bill |

You know what kills me is that people go and supercharge Honda S2000's and new Corvette's and put out gobs of power with complete reliability. These cars are 11:1 CR !!!!! What the hell ever happened to the old rule of thumb that supercharged cars needed low compression? My son's 03 SVT Cobra mustang that is intercooled & supercharged from the factory came with 8.5:1 CR like one would expect. So, . . . What gives? What is the answer???? These supercharged 11:1 CR cars seem to survive just fine with fairly high boost. Inquiring minds want to know! Ed Seldom Correct, Never in doubt! . |

i have two boosted cars. the supercharger is on a 351w in a 95 svt cobra. the model is a Vortech T trim and we are limiting it to 10 lb of boost. the engine made 573 rwhp with a manual bodied automatic and flowmaster exhaust. cr is 9.5 to1 my superformance has a 408w with everything properly profiled with 9.5 to 1 cr. cam is crower matched to a 93mm garrett intercooled turbo, fast management system, 80lb injectors. the engine is still being sorted out but we started at 5 lbs of boost and on a mustang chassis dyno we made 525 rwhp. and 545 tq at 3750 rpm at 10 lbs we made 612 rwhp and 630 tq at 3900 rpm. we pushed it up to 25 lbs of boost and the results were sick. we were over 1120 rwhp and 1260 tq at 4400 rpm, we also had the intercooler working. i will not drive this car with more than 10 lbs of boost and whatever the added hp will be with the intercooler on. we only used the intercooler on the 25 lbs of boost. in both cars i only run c116 fuel for testing, I am told you'll never hear the detonation before everything has left the premises. incidentally the reason i mention a mustang dyno is that the results from a mustang dyno are typically 15% lower results than an ineretia dyno like a dynojet. doesn't really matter its all relative anyways. the mustang dyno uses an eddy current load which is closer to the real world as far as results are concerned. |

I'm adding a Vortec to my Backdraft carburated 5.0, going with a Pro-Systems Blow Thru carb which came highly recommended. Damn, this would have been easier with a build sheet on the motor, but, it is what it is. Motor is a Keith Craft short block (306). Edelbrock Performer heads, there are a couple of choices here, slight difference in the intake valve size. Edelbrock Air Gap intake, Edelbrock performer cam. +/- 9.3 to 1 CR. I also have a Holley electric fuel pump. Car is making 305 RWHP now. I've filled out the tech sheet from Pro-Systems so they can send me the carb that best fits my motor specs and what I'm trying to accomplish. Next, Vortec Supercharger. I'm going with the polished one to keep with the look of the car and motor (shiny). What else am I going to need????? 1) Pro-Systems Blow Thru Carb +/- $900. I'll have a Holley 600 for sale afterwards. 2) Vortec SC $1900 I have a MSD distributor. How is timing advance/retard handled? How is the boost setting handled. According to KC Motors, keep it under 8psi the motor should be fine. Getting close to pulling the trigger and getting this started. |
