No, don't run it with the cap loose. The coolant will heat up and expand and you'll probably have a mess under the hood as well as on the ground. Remove the temp sending unit which is located behind the stat housing and the air will escape there. Once you see coolant start to exit this opening, replace the sending unit and top it off. Then drive it and see what happens. Let it cool off and then recheck coolant level. WARNING, I suppose this goes without saying, but never remove a radiator cap while the engine is hot. Good Luck.

Thanks Wizard! I'll try that tomorrow.

I had the fluctuation symptoms on a fresh engine several years ago. During the engine build I had purchased a reman water pump at Pep Boys, trying to save a $$. As temprature would build to the point of the themostat opening I experienced 140 degrees to indicated 200 degrees in about 30 seconds or less after thermostat would open. Coolant was full. Didn't know what to think for several weeks. Changed gaskets, checked heads (again). It turned out to be the design of the water pump impellor (stamped steel variety). It was cavitating I guess. I changed the pump for a OEM Ford with cast iron impellor 63/64 Hipo 289 type and symtoms vanished immediately with no other changes. Never any similar symptoms again.

I have been running this motor for about 2 yrs. now. This fluctuating temp problem started when I changed the thermostat. I was able to get some more coolant in last night, by disconnecting the upper rad hose at the housing and pouring it down the hose. I started it up and let it run at a fast idle with the fan running. The temp seemed stable. Unfortunately, we have a wet weekend forcasted. (Ernestos last kick at the can) I won't be able to get it out on the road. I am going to take the rad hose off again, and see if it will take any more coolant. Wish me luck!;)

I'm sooooooooooooo confused. |
Very curious problem, this is, with my thermostat! Replaced the stat, bled all air out of the system (checked this by removing the sending unit). Just came back from a short run. Temp at first stays at about 160 for a long time, then shoots up to 210, then drops back down to 160, shoots back up to 210 and back to 180. Hovers there for awhile, then shoots back up to 210. This keeps happening over and over again. Not too critical, as it really doesn't run HOT! Just a little warm. Anyone experience this annoying problem?

427Snake,
Did you drill a bleed hole in the new thermostat? The thermostat can't get a good temperature signal if you're not flowing bypass water through a heater. Thermostat Modifications |
The thermostat came with a pre-drilled hole in it. Can't understand this!
