Engine DE-tuning!
Ok, this may be a strange question, but is it possible to easily DE-tune an engine to make it less powerful?
I've got a 408 stroker (http://www.cobraclub.com/classifieds...7&cat=8&page=1) that puts out 500BHP. It's not going in a cob, but rather a mid engined car that would mean spending BIG money on a gearbox. Could just changing something like the camshaft enable the power to be dropped down? Would a smaller carb (it's currently fitted with an 850cfm double pumper) help or would it just make the engine run too lean and damage it? Any advice appreciated. Thanks Simon:( |
Simon,
To kill torque which may possibly damage your trans, you need to lose compression, particularly at lower rpm. In your case you can do this by fitting cylinder heads with larger chambers and/or pistons with deeper/larger bowls. Also a camshaft with MORE duration/overlap will reduce the effective compression at lower rpm. When reducing compression DO NOT increase the piston to head clearance by use of thicker gaskets or machining the squish band as this will make your engine more susceptible to detonation. There is another method where you are required to be extremely careful with the use of the RH & LH pedals but other people tell me it has not proven reliable in the past! Jac Mac |
Can't you just not push the gas pedal down as far? :D

A 390 4bbl or a 2bbl will kill a bunch of power. No, it won't make it run lean.

Are trying not to buy a ZF transmission for your GT 40?
I believe Scott is right my engine dyno's at 535 hp with a 850 cfm Demon and only 488 with a 750 Demon. How many HP are you wanting to loose? You might be able to change your intake as well and loose a few hp. |
Why not adjust the throttle linkage so full pedal is less that full throttle? Or just slide some carpet behind the gas pedal.

I agree with scottj go with the smaller carb, that's one of the things the Nascar guys do to reduce hp.

Wouldn't the smaller carburetor likely give MORE torque in the lower RPM range though? I would like to see what your torque curve looks like. Maybe the answer is as simple as pulling some ignition timing out of it, but I'm thinking that if I REALLY wanted to tame it down, less C.R. would be the only way to go.

You could always back the timing off about 6 or 7 degrees. That will kill your outputs top and bottom.
And your fuel mileage. And your throttle response. Maybe we should just swap my 331 for your 408. |
