Milodon oil pan is not lining up with block.
Oil pan bolt hole alignment is off for all the holes with the engine block. The alignment is close at the back end but gets worse toward the front. I have a late '70s 302 block stroked to 331 (steel girdle, Melling HV oil pump). Toward the front the holes are half covered with the pan lip. Is this common? Should I just enlarge the holes and use bigger washers if need be? Thanks for your help.

Sounds like the wrong pan. I don't ever recall hearing of one that far off.

Yeah, it's Milodon's 31600. I double checked on their
website.. It's their road race pan for 289 - 302 engine. I thought maybe the oil pump was preventing it from lining up but it still didn't line up right without the oil pump installed...

Hmmm... Maybe call them and see what they say. It could have been missed-marked. Just doesn't sound right to me.

Milodon uses a vibrating marker to scribe the part # on the body of the pan. Is 31600 scribed on your pan?. I had a Milodon RR pan and it fit perfect. Are you using a stock 289/302 block or is it an aftermarket block? As you stated the 31600 is for a 289/302 but a very similar 31630 is for a 351W. Maybe it is mismarked. It may be bent a little or ir could have closed up a little during the welding process. If you have the 31600 use a spreader or hammer gently on the inside of the rails to open it up. The main cap seal area would be much larger diameter on a 351W, check this before hammering on the pan.

Yeah, 31600 is scribed on the inside. Also looks like
a letter is scribed above and below the 31600 probably indicating the inspector and maker of the pan.. The box it came in says 31600 too.. I have a Ford 302 late '70s block stroked to 331. It's a D8 or D9 engine..

I checked on Summit Racing.. They indicate that the
31600 pan is not strokered clearanced! I guess you can't use a Milodon with a 331??? I'll call them to confirm..

If it doesn't fit, take it back. Once you start beating on it, or enlarging the holes, you will have to keep it.

I bought Rick's pan and am using it to this minute, on my 331 stroker. Used it earlier on my 302. It fits perfectly, and required NO Armstrong Engineering.
Don't do it (beat on it) - return it and get another. Deal with Milodon - if you have to - and it will be made right. But do not hack it up because, as J Persons says, you will then own it. |

Glad to hear it is doing you well. That was a good pan and controlled the oil well, the fit was real good and didn't need a lot of "coaxing" to remove or install. |

An, yes, I agree with you - it's an excellent pan. Quality of build, absence of leaks, appearance, and fit are all top-shelf. And stability of oil pressure under autox use has proven its' functionality. Real good stuff. Iwanta, by all means check in with Milodon. |
