stage 8 Header Bolts

Has anyone tried Stage 8 header bolts on a Backdraft roadster with a Ford Racing 351 W crate motor (stock 385 hp) or on any cobra for that matter.

After approx the 1st 1800 miles, I lost a couple of bolts causing the need for the gasket to be replaced.

They work well. Another option is ARP's bolts with the heads drilled for safety wire.

After leaving a trail of ARP header bolts from Denver to Aspen on my first long trip, I replaced them with Stage 8 header bolts. I have an FE so there isn't a lot of room under the hood. They should be pretty easy to install, especially with a 351w. At least you can SEE your header bolts! :D

I haven't had any more problems and they're still tight, more than 23,000 miles later.

Wow thats awsome. It sounds like your a "Driver" as well. I took my car to cape code from CT the 2nd week I had the car. I just love driving the thing and my kids love coming with me. A much better option than the "Harley"

Thanks for the feed back on the Stage 8's
Have Fun

I've got Stage 8 header bolts on my FE and haven't had even an inkling of one coming loose.

Spectre sales a really attractive header bolt set, gold zinc plated with safety wire and drilled bolts. Hex head and w/internal Allen head. I have them on my 351w. Grade 8, with SS wire and everything, looks great.

I had the same experience. I lost 2 bolts and ruined a gasket after about 1000 miles on my 351W crate motor. If I may ask a stupid question, what is the difference between a Stage 8 bolt and a "regular" bolt?

I have used Stage 8 header bolts on my (former) 351 Backdraft. If I remember correctly I had to do a little grinding on a few of the hex washers to allow them to clear the header pipe. Other than that they worked great and I never had any problems with them backing out. I would use them again if I build another Cobra.

I had to grind some of the hex washers too, I also used some Loc-Tite on the bolts.

W-lewis,

Stage 8 header bolts are a brand name for a special design bolt that won't come loose once installed. Here's a link to their WEB site with a description and picture of the bolts.

Many thanks Jim. My engine compartment is so tight and the header bolts are so inaccessible, it might be difficult to fasten the retainer clip. I'll definitely let my mechanic look at them.

w-lewis,

I looked at the photos of your engine in your gallery and it doesn't look to me that installing the Stage 8 header bolts would be any problem what so ever.
Nice looking car by the way!

Thank you for your thoroughness. I would guess that you went to the Vintage Motor Sport Website. BDR 426 is my car.

Thanks for the assistance.

header bolts

I installed Stage 8 on my 5.0 after loosing a few header bolt. I've driven my Cobra about 8,000 miles with them and no problem. I did have to grind a few to fit. Be careful not to file to much off.

Jim,
My header bolts on the right side are accessible from top and bottom, but left is only accessible from bottom (unless steering shaft and throttle linkage is removed), but is still very tight. I'll give it a try though. Thanks,
walter
