BIG power, LOW weight?
i dont know anything about ford based engines. I'm lookin for big power from low weight.
what route should i go? |

Aluminum 302 block, Yates racing heads. Add some goodies inside and top it off with a single plane and a four barrel. Then bolt it to a Button clutch with billet flex plate.

If you use a Ford Modular 4.6L engine with 03/04 Cobra Heads, Aftermarket Aluminum Block (Sean Hyland), either Whipple or Kenne Bell screw charger, Manley 4340 H-beam rods (or equivalent) a stock Cobra crank, stock cams basically stock everything except blower you will have somewhere in the neighborhood of 620 plus horsepower. The really important point is that you wiil have more than 500 lbs-ft of torque at basically 2000 rpm. Most 600+ HP engines need to get somewhere north of 4000+ RPM to produce that kind of torque.
The effect in a 2300 lbs car could be conservatively described as explosive. Oh I forgot the only thing that is big about the package is the power and the engine physical dimensions. The power comes from an engine that weighs less (barely) than 400 lbs including the blower and the displacement is only 281 cubic inches. They start in any weather, idle repeatably and predictabily can be set up to have a rumpty rump type idle or a 03/04 blown Cobra type idle. The other item not frequently mentioned is mileage. This is not only 620+ HP but it gets significantly north of 20mpg on the highway. While we drive these cars because they are land based rockets it's also nice when we don't have to refuel that often. After all 91/93 Octane can be expensive in large quantities, not to mention aggravating when you could be driving instead of fueling (and paying). Ed |

There are easier ways to make the same power with a bit more low & mid range for a lot less money. For example, an aluminum 351 / 408, 10.5:1 cr, AFR heads, good hydraulic roller, and a 750 HP will easily make these numbers for thousands less. It would be more streetable as well. I never compared weights but I'm sure you could save some with a serious T5 vs. a Tremec. The aluminum block, heads, intake, flywheel, and quicktime bellhousing could all shave weight as well.

I dont know if you have ever driven one of these car before but it does not take 600hp to move it down the road like a rocket.
400hp in a 2300lbs is like 600hp in a 3600lbs muscle car. And with the short wheel base she will swap ends before you can say oh s%&*. Will somone cut in and tell me they have 600hp that they are actually able to use all of it. HP not planted to the pavement is waisted. I have about 450hp and getting it to stick and go is the hardest part. MadDog |

Doesn't The Engine Shop here on Long Island offer an aluminum 351W based block? If I'm correct, the sky's the limit on power. 600 HP and up should be easy with one of these engines. The again, there's always the possibility of an all aluminum FE, with even more rediculous power potential. The big question is, how big is your budget?

I am running a 351 based 418 with dart alum heads... this weighs about 500 lbs w/o trans. I used the newer siamezed sportsman block... the alum block saves about 90 lbs but it will cost you. I think the 351 is a good compromise...

In my PM response to you I made a typo error. " Less starter, water pump and fuel pump, an aluminum 460 Man O'War (9.5 deck) will weigh about as much as our aluminum Motown SBC (455lbs), possibly less but we haven't built one yet. The bore centers on a Windsor are smaller than a SBC. The 8.2 deck will definitely weigh less than that." Our Motown is 355lbs-not 455. Our aluminum Merlin is 471 lbs. The Windsor 460 will be very close to 355. Sorry for the confusion. |
