engine break-in
how many miles should i put on a new motor before i can let it all hang out on the drag strip???

A minimum of 500 miles, But I would go 2,500 IMHO.

Depends on who built the motor and if they did a run-in and a dyno test... but to go balls to the wall at the track I would put 1,500 minimum to shake out any problems.

what difference does it make ..if its going to break it will break ...break in the cam and your rings and go to town

Shake out the problems:
Oil leaks, fuel leaks, loose bolts, valve adjustment changes, clutch and adjustment settling in, drive train noises, battery hold down clamps getting loose, headers bolts not tight, header pipes hangers loose or missing, pvc hose popping out, wires loose. Man you could write a book on 'shaking it out' just from reading Club Cobra! :D BUT, if your good, really good and you trust your work, put 500 miles on it and drive it like you stole it! You could shake it out 1/4 mile at a time. |
A good hard launch at the track will seat the rings in one pass. When we build engines for the race car they don't get driven for one mile let alone what you're considering. The engine goes together, in the car, the car goes in the trailer and the trailer goes to the track. When we get there we warm the engine lash the valves, set the clutch, top off the fuel and make a qualifying pass. In 39 years I NEVER broke one doing this.
All the leak stuff etc. will have plenty of time to manifest itself after you start street driving it and you can fix it then. Ed |

Drag racers rebuild their motors often enough they don't care about rings seating or frying a clutch by hazing it before it's been broke in. I believe a solid 500-1000 miles, atleast one oil change allows for proper break-in and engine gunk to be flushed. But hey, each camp has their opinion...yet, I've never heard an engine builder claim harm by breaking in a motor w/ milage...but many warn against flogging it early in it's life.
