Need assistance with my 351W

In the process of replacing a 351W in my 1996 f-350, I would appreciate suggestions for avoiding oil leaks and any other tricks. I purchased a long block from NAPA which came with a 3 year unlimited millage warranty. That's hard to beat, Ford and Jasper wanted more $$ and less warranty.

Thanks in advance fella's.

There's no real secret to it. The trickiest seal is already in place - the rear main. From here it's very carefull attention to small details, and using quality parts. Look at each gasket surface carefully before assembly. Make sure they're flat, clean, and damage free.

Here's some other tips I've picked up along the way:

1. Front Cover: A real light smear of silicone sealant on the cover surface. Not much, just a light smear. Use that to glue the gasket in place. Nothing between the gasket and block.

Align the front cover to the crankshaft. Put on a couple of bolts to hold it snug. Slid the balancer on until it just hits the seal lip. Adjust the position of the cover to make sure the front seal is even along the balancer surface.

Also look at the bottom of the cover where it meets the block to ensure that it's straight and level.

2. Oil Pan: I really like the once piece gaskets. NAPA makes an excellent part. If you look at the gasket closely, you'll see there are some small square tabs at the end of the circular part. Those fit into slots in the front cover, and the rear cap. They are usually too long. With wire cutters trim them down just a tad, about 1-2mm. Also trim the corners at about a 45* angle. Sqirt a little silicone goo in the corners, but nowhere else.
