Sources for Lightened Steel Flywheel
My car is coming together and I need to get lightened steel flywheel for a 302 (331 stroker). 157 tooth, 28 ounce balance. Any recommendations on high quality flywheel sources? Thanks, Rickd

If you can't find what you are looking for, take a good steel flywheel to your local machine shop and have them turn it down to your desired weight..........
Back in my dirt track days, the rules changed and we could not use lightweight aluminum flywheels anymore.......we expiremented with "lightened" steel wheels and actually had one down to the aluminum weight and ran it for a year with no problems........ I would not recommend it or put one like that in my own car though......A steel wheel can be lightened up a lot without losing reliability and safety......... David |
Why go thru all that? - get an aluminum wheel and get the same results with less aggravation. They work just fine, no warping issues, Fidenza's have replaceable friction faces (if you ever need it), etc.
Lightening a steel wheel would present some issues, I would think. Hope you've got a scattershield on the car, for starters. You would have to cut a bunch off the face of the wheel to take much weight off, too, and not certain how that would affect the clutch assembly - less thread contact for pressure plate bolts, strength of ring gear contact, etc. All are maybes....except for using an aluminum wheel. Works great on a street car. |
