To those who think some of our builds are a little conservative, we offer evidence of our on-going efforts to dispel that notion. The Man O’War Hardcore 427 Drag Man O’War small block.

Now 706 HP should produce ¼ mile times conservatively in the low 10 range in the right, light vehicle and traps in the 137 MPH range. A/F ratios and BSFC figures are excellent.
Here’s a brief description of this combination: Man O’War iron 9.5 deck block, with 13.5:1 using C-14 race gas, forged and balanced Eagle and Mahle internals, Hardcore spec solid roller, and the really significant items, new Man O’War 235cc, 18 degree heads. We pulled out some stops to see what they’d really produce. We hand-ported them in-house the good old fashioned way-slight tootsie roll in chamber and ports, gasket and manifold match and our killer valve job. Speaking of manifolds, due to selling out our batch of Man O’War single plane intakes, we temporarily reverted to the Super Victor with 4500 adapter. We anticipate a little more power very soon when our manifold arrives.
Remember, we’ve put LS style ports in Ford architecture. Seems to work OK…

That's a lot of HP for a sb Ford considering you are using in line valves. What a good feeling it is when you pop the hood and the guy you just blew away was positive you were gonna show him a big block.;)

Keep up the good work and one of these days the Ford guys are gonna realize who Bill Mitchell is.

We would need a cam substantially smaller than this to allow 10.5:1. Examples are our 460 (admittedly 33CI larger) at 11.0:1 with .621/.627, 254/260 and our 427 Hardcore at 10:1 with .578/.597, 252/260.
The 460's routinely make 630 and the 427's 535-540.

Red: Sorry, I didn't mean change just one thing, i.e., compression. I realize such changes have to combine others as you've pointed out. What I was getting at is building a streetable engine, one that can use pump gas. I just dropped my 12.5:1 FE427 to 10.3:1 for that reason. Not as much kick, but I don't have to wear ear plugs now.:LOL:

Red: Sounds good to me . . . and you don't have to carry that expensive racing gas or AV gas, you can get expensive gas right at the pump.:rolleyes:

We dont have a high compression engine but iv noticed how much more responsive the engine is on race gas,Man O war do you find that to be true or is it just me dreaming its better?%/

You're not dreaming Bill. When I take home some shop race gas (with lead) for my 10.4:1 Sideoiler, the pipes turn dark tan, shutoff is clean and throttle response is very sharp-and I have a lot of duration and fair overlap.
However all our builds here are very responsive to throttle and idle because AED builds 870's and 1050's to our spec and our dyno guy will work the jets if he see's one with less than optimal A/F or slightly sluggish. They go out of here real snappy.

I thought we were a little on the rich side anyway,its hard to jet other than by the sound of the engine with street gas it doesnt seem to color the plugs like the race gas does,our 408 doesnt have that much cam its a custom ground mech roller in the low .7 lift for a blowthrew app. just havent had the 5k to finish were on an 830hp I just dont want to hurt this mill going lean the peace of mind is worth it not taking it to the edge of its perfomance with timing and jetting..

Funny you ask. We did build the 302 long that Thacker and Jimmy Shine set a record with at B'ville in their Deuce. It was our block and heads.
We have a Magnussen blower on the shelf that we'll test on our combinations soon. I'll post when that happens but we'll be testing SBC first. :(
