Head & Cam Upgrade Question
I have a stock '89 injected 302 in my FFR MK II and want your opinion on my plan. I have a Cobra intake to install, so while it is apart I figured heads and a cam would be good. From what I have read, I can put Trick Flow Twisted Wedge heads with 2.02 intake valves on the stock engine with an E303 cam and 1.6 rockers without tearing it down to flycut the pistons.
First and most important, is my info. correct? I would hate to punch a piston because of bad info. Second, has anyone done this and was the change of top end worth the cost and work? Any dyno info. before and after? Third, What valve springs for hydraulic roller lifters and is the push rod length different? Fourth, any pitfalls I should watch out for? Sorry for all the questions, but I appreciate your help. Steve |
My recommendation would be to go with a set of AFR 165 heads. They flow the same cubic ft as the Trick Flows and they do it with smaller valves = higher velocity and more power. They will bolt right on to the stock engine and go with the E cam or with the Trick Flow stage II cam. This combo along with an EDELBROCK performer rpm intake on a carbureted car will result in something like 350 - 365 hp. AFR will give you tech tips on springs etc. Also talk to Keith Craft - they can recommend a package - and they sell the AFR's. I jut put a KC 331 stroker in my cobra. Had a stock 302 in a previous cobra and went the TF route - because someone inadvertently said the AFR would not fit - their mistake and I went with the 'other' head. Good luck. Rickd
