Choke or No Choke?
 
First off, I did a CC search for "Choke" and most of the results had to do with Tom Brady, Randy Moss, and the Patriots. interesting.

My question is, do most of you with 351w strokers have a choke and do you recommend one?
My car is cold blooded and I'm considering to add a electric choke.

Dan what kind of carb do you have now?? does it have any kind of choke housing? I really don't know if you can add one or not. I could be wrong though. those in the know with chime in soon.

Personally, I can't see why anyone with a street driven car wouldn't have a choke. They make life so much easier.

My Cobra is fuel injected but all my Cobra buddies have carb's. Most say they don't need a choke because they sit in the car and keep it running till it warms up. We have disconnected a few chokes because the guys did not use them.

I'm with Dwight. No choke and no regrets. It makes me warm the car up a bit before starting off.

I do not have a choke, but I would rather have one. I also wish I had a throttle pull knob. All of my antique carbureted vehicle are set up like that, and it's convenience that I have gotten used to. I doubt I will bother adding them to the Cobra, but I still wish I had them.

No choke, mill the air horn and "go with the (air) flow" for more HP.

... have electric choke on mine... is an all-aluminum 427 Windsor stroker, running a Holley 770 street avenger- so proper warm-up is crucial. This way, I just don't have to be sitting in the seat feathering the pedal the whole time. I usually use the warm-up time (about 5-7 minutes) to check for leaks while it's getting up to temp. The engine (and the temp gauge) let me know when the Dragon is awake & ready for battle.

:LOL: IF you removed the air cleaner and have OPEN headers, you would still never notice the difference on the street.
That is the " if it's good for the race track, it must be good for the street" mentality.
My 70 LS6 Chevelle had over 600 FWHP. It had an air horn and a choke.

I grew up in the era of no chokes and cable operated chokes. Learned to work around cold and hot starts with careful application of throttle input and lots of curse words! However, those lessons came back in a good way with my 418W and Demon carb sans choke. The cold starts are actually pretty easy; the winter-gas starts with a warm engine proved to be a beeyatch! Lessons from long ago proved invaluable, along with letting the fuel pump run for a bit before engaging the starter. The occasional backfire through the carb reinforces my belief that only real men can drive these things!
(Whatever works in your fantasy!)

All that being said, I'm thinking FI might be in the cards down the road!

Chokes are for girls!!

No choke has been present on any of my Cobra's. No problems with starting or running ever...

Electric choke on a Demon carb...STILL haven't figured out how to adjust the d@mned thing though!!! :)

Choke came on my Roush w/Holley 770 and it works great. No compelling reason to disable it.

There is not much clearance between the lid of Stelling and Hellings air cleaner and a Holley air horn...

I agree with RodKnock,
If you can't get a few inches clearence between the highest lip on the choke housing & the air cleaner lid (as most of us can't) get rid of the choke & horn.
A properly set up carb will start with a few pumps, run & idle just fine in the coldest weather you would ever want to drive in within a few miniutes of warmup.
How do I know you ask??---Check out where I live, I drive mine untill the snow flies.:eek:

Ford Motorsport 392 and the Superformance choke knob/cable kept hanging so I took the choke off.
Have never missed it and actually like the cleaned up underhood appearance.

Don't have chokes on any of my three toys, two 4 bbls on the side oiler, one 4bbl on the 331 and 3X2's on the HP289. Minor inconvenience and more hp. No adjustments required.:LOL:
