Summit Air Cleaner On 351W
Some time last year I asked about intakes for the 351W with limited hood clearance and stated I might try Summit's new aluminum cleaner with the filter top. I have done so and here's what I did to make it fit:
The cleaner comes with a nice billet top and bottom plate with a K&N-type filter sandwiched in between. Initially it bumped the hood so I cut off the throat that sits on the carb and and ground it down even. This revealed another problem. The fuel level screws on my Demon carb sit up top and interfere with the bottom plate, so I took measurements and drilled holes and wallowed them out so the screw now sit inside the cleaner. A little RTV to seal it up and I have almost an inch of clearance. I took a hex head 5/16" screw (Summit's comes with 1/4" to fit the Holley) and turned it into tapered head on the bench grinder so the top is now flat and I have the clearance I need. I talked with a guy from K&N about some sort of custom cleaner that might work but he quit after a while. I think this solution looks and works better. Bill Stradtner |
Which Summit Cleaner? I might want to copy that. How about some pictures?

Paul;
Summit has their own brand of oval air cleaner in both 12" and 15" long. According to the specs I got off their web site the 15" is a little taller so I used the 12", part#SUM-G282. It can be seen on page 286 of their new catalogue. Side note: Jegs has a clearcoat aluminum fuel log that works and looks great and doesn't add all the blue and red colors under the hood. Sorry, no pictures. My new laptop and my camera aren't talking yet. Bill Stradtner |
I used a drop base, moroso p#65910, to solve this problem.
|
I had less than 1/2" of drop before the base hit my distributor, hence the Summit.

I use the same 12" Summit filter-top with similar mods as Bill made on my FE. It still fits within the Kirkham turkey pan. It flows much better than the Stellings & Hellings that I was running. Without any other changes, the fuel smell in the exhaust is gone (I was running a little rich before the switch).

K&N will make custom size elements.
My 12 inch oval came with a 2" element. K&N stock sizes were 2" and 4". They will custom make elements to your specs. I had them make me a couple 3" elements. The cleaner now just clears the hood scoop. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d.../PICT00086.JPG |
Jim,
Is that a Summit cleaner in your picture that Bill is talking about? |
Never mind. I looked up the number at Summit. I see that Bill's has the filter element on top as well. Both look nice.
|
Bill,
The Summit cleaner has a filter element in the top. Can that be removed from the aluminum top so the top can be chromed or is the filter and aluminum ring one unit? |
Paul;
The whole thing comes apart. There is a small disk that holds the filter top down and it has two allen-head screws. Bill Stradtner |
Good. Gonna' get me one of those.
