Windsor 400M Rods
I purchased an assembled engine and it has the throws machined to accept 400M rods. Can anyone tell me the advantage of using these rods and does it change the stroke?
Getting ready to build a fire in it this morning. I do know I had a hell of a time getting a pan to fit that the rod bolts would not hit. It had a cast aluminum Cobra T pan(7qt) on it. The stock pan would not clear either. Went with a Moroso rear sump for a Fox body Mustang. Had to go with a high torque starter to get it to clear the new pan. Am I having fun yet? YOU BETCHA it is only money...when I run out, I will just go get some more. Goverment prints more every day. |
No real advantage. They're just a stock rod. The rod doesn't change the stroke....only if the crankshaft has been offset-ground will the stroke change.

400m rods use a longer bolt than 351c/351w which may be the reason the hit the pan. At 6.58" long they give a nice rod ratio in a 351w ( 1.88 to1 as opposed to 1.702 to 1 ) and allow the use of the piston from the 3.25" stroke 302w ( 3.5" stroke-6.58 rod-1.165" pin height ) 272/292/312 Y- block pin bushs press straight in & take std SBF 0.912" pin size.
You dont mention if you have a stroker crank- have fun- those std ford parts are plenty tough, had a set of those rods in a 4" stroke Windsor/Cleveland that saw 8k before the crank broke- all the rods were still in one piece though. Jac Mac |
