Oil Pan suggestions for a Superformance and a 351W
I need to replace my oil pan (a Canton Road Race) on my Superformance. The pan has a bad weld and is dripping oil all over the place. It's really making a mess of the underside of the car, so I've stopped driving it... and it's killing me.
I'm looking to replace the pan and I'm just curious what options are out there beside the Canton pans? What else might you guy be using? Also, does anyone know if I can replace the pan with the engine still in the car.. I can get at all the bolts, but I'm unsure about the front/ rear seals?? (I've got a Dart Iron 351w -427ci block). Need help quickly since I dont want to loose another weekend! Thanks! |
Depends on what you're planning on using the car for. If it's a street and occasional drag car, then a factory pan will be the best thing out there. Inexpensive, small, easy to R&R, and won't leak.
But if you need a road race pan, I'd call Gordon Levy. Be sure and get the proper pick up to match the pan. R&R in the car should be a piece of cake. |

Why not just fix the weld? You may be able to do it without removing the pan. I've used Canton pans on several motors and never had 1 leak.

Bob, I'm looking to go with a Road Race pan since I like twisty roads and maybe a day at the track (I hope). WTM, I may call Dennis, but I've been working with Nick at Classic Concepts in Long Island. He's great, but always have Dennis as a backup. JWD, I've got nothing against Canton pans, I'm just checking to see what else is out there.. I might rwled this pan, but will not do it in the car..... Thanks for the suggestions!! |

I had a Canton on my previous motor, but have an Aviaid on my new one. It's probably exactly what you are looking for, 7 1/2 quart road race style with a T kickout in the front 2/3rds of the pan.
Nice workmanship, I like the aluminum color (as opposed to the brass color of the Canton). They also have a lot of Ford choices, (many more styles than Canton). Customer service: both companies are helpful, but the guy at Aviaid was notably so and responded to email's about delivery times and such. As far as Canton vs Aviad, the Aviad is lighter, (perhaps not as strong?) aesthetically more pleasing. There is also a guy from LA, who used to work at Aviad. I *think* his name is Armando or something like that. He is a one man operation, he handcrafts the pans himself. The wait is a little longer, but people say the workmanship is fantastic, and he'll custom make you any one you want. Someone out there know the guy I am talking about? |
armondo it is. i have one of his pans sitting in the shop now. seems to be pretty nice, pickup is 3/4 way back centered with a flat tray covering oil and gates around pickup. if you want pics i can post them later this evening.

Thanks all. I REALLY want something special and there are just far too many decisions to be made to get just the right pan.. I'm thinking of drawing up a design and getting Armondo to quote/ build it.
Just so I can get back on the road ASAP, it looks like I'm going to drop the pan and get it welded... for now... Looks are optional, but summer is getting shorter. |
I've had a Milodon Cobra road race pan for over 9 years and 25k miles. Works for me.

Replace the oil pan while in the car?
Yes, I replaced a stock dual sump stock pan with a Canton pan while the engine was in the car. The engine is a 351W and the car is an ERA.
I only raised the car up on front wheel ramps - a little tight but possible! |
New oil pan installed... Back on the road and getting ready for the Sept 6th show at Tasca Ford!!
