Race 14" Air filter
I recently dynoed my 373 engine with a universal spinners 1.5" dropped base, and a (14" x 3.5") K&N 2ply Nascar air filter element with a custom made aloy lid, which is virtually the same as a hipo 289 chrome lid but with an approx 3" diameter down bulge where the fastener is! We tried it without an air filter at all and there was no hp difference, but the air filter being 2ply 3.5"x 14" probably has no restriction, but we will be using an oiled filter for road use.
I have read where on a dropped base it is not wise to use an Extreme top, as there is can be a hp loss! Has anyone used the 1965 style Mustang Hipo chrome 14" lid which has flat areas across the top, or the K&N chrome tops which are more tapered up (1") and have a small flat area for the locating fastener? |
I'm using a dropped base with a repo 289 Hi-Po lid (top) on my 65 Mustang road racer, I also use a 3" tall paper filter, AC Delco brand. On the engine dyno I only lost 3 hp with the filter on vs. no filter at all.........

Race 14" Air filter
David,
I think thats a good result from your setup as I have heard figures of 19+hp loss, my un-oiled KN being 2ply is probably like running without any filter as I have proved on the dyno |
