Which Block should I use?

Hello!

There are a number of bare blocks available and I'm not sure which is the best value.
I plan to build a motor for street, auto-cross and some track use.
I'm thinking:
1. 4.125" bore
2. 9.5" deck height
3. 4 bolt mains
4. Clearanced for 4" stroke
5. Able to live with 600hp.
6. Cast Iron
7. Aluminum would be great if the price is reasonable

Any recomendations??

Thanks very much!

hard to beat a Dart block for a starting point. aluminum will be more than twice the price generally speaking.

I prefer the Dart Sportsman in this type application.

World Castings is another to look at and they are an advertiser here on CC.
Aluminum is going to be about twice as expensive as already noted.

I went with a 8.5" deck height Dart block with the big bore (4.125) and stroked it to get 363. I like the lower deck height block for the weight and hood clearance. Keith Craft built the long, 13/1 compression still getting the finishing touches on the install...

I just built a 445ci Windsor using a Dart Sportsman block. It fulfills all of your requirements and then some.

One more vote for Dart blocks. I could have taken mine up to 460 ci but I opted to stay in the 427 area with a Cleveland crank.

Which Block

Wow!

Thanks everyone.
The Dart Sportsman block looks like a great way to go.
Summit Racing is about 15 minutes from my house. Are there other companies out there that I should consider for better pricing?

Again, thanks very much!
Happy New Year ...
Al

Do an on-line search to find a good price before you buy. Keep in mind shipping.
When I was looking, I found quite a variation in price. Then I ended up going with a 1971 production block!

Blocks

Yes call me about a Dart Sportsman block. We keep them in stock and know what they need before you can build the engine. We can do top notch machine work on it for you and sell it to you ready to go. I do not think Summit or Jegs can do that for you and we can sell it just as cheap if not less than they can.
I am also getting a few blem blocks that have cosmetic things wrong but nothing that will affect the performance of the blocks what so ever. I can save someone about 300.00 on these blocks over the regular blocks. Give me a call at 870-246-7460 and we can talk. We also have a real sweet deal on complete short blocks using the Dart blocks right now as well.

Thanks, Keith Craft

Block

Keith,

Thanks for your feedback. I'm a couple of months away from buying the block and rotating assembly. Really hadn't thought about getting a short block assembly.
I was planning to use the Scat forged crank, H beam rods assembly - any thoughts.
Thank you again - I'll call you before I place an order else where.

Ford Racing has released the M-6010-BOSS-302-BB series block which now can support a 4.125 bore comfortably you can come up with 363ci from a 302 form factor.

also Ford Racings block is a reasonable price.(1K cheaper than either a WP or a DART)

We use both the Eagle and Scat parts with no problem. Some people like one more than the other but like I said they have worked fine for us in engines up to 700HP and then we up-grade the rod bolts so that it will handle about 1000HP. There are several piston manufacturers out there that make some good pistons for your application.
Thanks, Keith Craft

The Boss block is a nice piece...but it has a rather short skirt length on the cylinders.

It's a bit of a pain if you're considering a stroker.

Rickd 01-20-2009 11:16 AM

I have a Keith Craft 331 stroker. If I were to go for another motor for a new project I would love to have KC build a Dart block based stroker with the wider 4.125 bore. Definitely can't go wrong with a Dart.
