Acceptable Oil pressure at Idle
Is 37-40 psi acceptable at idle when the engine is at operating temp? I have a new KC 363 Dart block engine. I'm just getting all the feed back I can...Thanks Mike

mine runs 25 whether i used 5w30, 10w30, or 20w50.
i was told to let the idle fall where it may, and have read where it takes very little pressure at idle, less than 10 lbs., to keep things working. you just want your working pressure to be where it should be from my understanding.
higher flow could be preferred over pressure in some instances.

That's plenty. FWIW, the 1970 Ford shop manual (Boss/429/428cj/scj/429cj/scj) states that the correct psi is 25-60 lbs @2000rpm HOT. FURTHER, it lists the minimum psi as 6lbs at 400 rpm! BTW, my FE runs high-teens at idle when blistering hot. |

Any oil pressure above 10 psi at idle is fine in any motor, as long as the pressure value is consistant over time.
My 351 has 45 PSI at idle and 55 to 60 PSI at speed. Have 18K miles and no problems internal so far ... knock on wood.

Sounds good (my hot pressure @ 800-850 rpm idle is 38-39), and as a general rule of thumb, you want to pull 10psi for every 1,000 rpm.

We used to use 10 pounds per 1,000 RPM.
Not sure why.....but It seems to work.

Keep in mind if you are using an oil cooler setup you will drop -- 5-10PSI due to the added volume of the circuit.
