Reverse rotation water pump
Want to convert my 351W ('71) to a serpentine belt system.
Where can I get a reverse-rotation water pump? I've tried Jeg's, Summit and Edlebrock - nothing for the 351W. Thanks! Dwain |

I guess I didn't find that one because I searched for a '71. The only question is, what is the difference between a '71 block/timing cover and the '86-'93s? Wonder what the "minor modifications" are for the '79-'85s? I'll check w/Ford Racing and report back. D. |
Ive got a brand new Edelbrock polished reverse rotation waterpump and timing cover to suit if youre interested. They have never been used.

I'd be very interested to know what modification is needed also.... Just a few weeks ago I rebuilt a 1984 351-W for my niece's husband and we went from the original reverse rotation water pump to an older model "standard" pump for V-belts, no mods needed, bolted right on, works perfectly...............everything bolted right up,timing chain cover,water pump, and brackets....There should be no difference in the block externally,the only difference I've seen in the timing chain cover would be the timing pointer location on some models. Some are on the passenger side (older models) and most newer models have the pointer on the drivers side...You just have to put it on the side that lines up with the harmonic damper and the damper you use will determine which side to locate the pointer on.

OK, here's the scoop according to Ford Racing:
The pump that Terry identified (M-8501-C50) will work with the early timing covers. The "minor modifications" necessary would be for possibly adjusting the spacer/shim thickness(es) for the bracket system (alt., p/s, a/c, etc.). Not a big deal. The reason that pump was not mentioned for the earlier '60s - '78 engines is because the reverse-rotation system wouldn't normally be found on those engines. Onward and upward! |
I would Suggest a 1996 5.8 bronco pump.
-- should not be an issue -- I would get a motorcraft pump (new) and it should come with the round outlets on the water pump backing plate --that *should* work with any timing cover proposed. --Steve |
Well,I know that the 1985 5.0 timing cover will bolt right up to a '71 351,and so will the water pump. That's what I did when swapping a 351 into my 1985 5.0 LX.
I did upgrade to a Stewart HD water pump,which uses a larger shaft and the 460 pump impeller,and is reverse rotation. |
I just installed a serpetine conversion on my 347 that did not require the reverse rotation. If you have a power steering pump though, it may not be feasible. Call March performance and speak to Doug, he's a Ford man and seems to know what he's talking about.
