engine timing
Can anyone tell me how to set the ignition timing on a 351 ford racing crate engine.385 hp. thanks
|
I've tried to set mine, but pointer is actually a circle and positioned whereby it faces RF wheel and only way to see it is with car on a lift and you're watching from inside the fender. Takes two people with Rf wheel/tire removed. I thought mine was only one like this. I just guessed and set timing by sound and feel.

Not enough information.
EFI or carb? What type of distributor/ignition system? Does the distributor have vacuum advance? If you have an old style carb and distributor: You want 10 - 16 initial depending on cam. 10 for mild cam; 16 for radical cam. You want 32 -36 total (mechanical + initial) all in by 3000 - 3500 rpm. Vacuum should add 12 deg at 3 inches of vacuum less than the vacuum your engine idles at. Note initial is set with vacuum disconnected and plugged. |
Something doesn't sound right. As you look at the front of the balancer with the #1 cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke, the timing marks should be about 10-11 o'clock. The timing pointer should be in the same area. It should be easy to see the marks by looking down over the top of the alternater, but under the water pump.
Many balancers have two or even three sets of timing marks. I have heard that some of the Ford crate engines do not include a timing pointer. You might have to buy or make one. |
Mine must be one of those motors without a pointer. It has a circular "window" mounted on passenger side of balancer, only visible from the RH wheel well.

I have two sets of timing number on my balancer.
You can move the timing mark anywhere you like of you know how to set up the rest. Find absolute TDC. Put a pointer somewhere you like and then get that Mr. Gasket timing tape. Put it in place and have at it. Granted it isn't like using the harmonic balance's marks, but will get you in the area. Just a suggestion. :D |
Thanks for the tip.
