67 427 So
I know that it is preferred to have a 65 SO. I just discovered
the 427 SO I was planning to use is actually a 67. Will I have any problems with smog & registration in CA? 67 427’s came equipped the same as the 65’s. Rob |
How can you nail down the year of build on a 427 S.O. anyway? The paper work on my ERA indicates a 1966, but I have no idea how to confirm that.

The block casting is C7AE-A and the casting date is 7D7.

Do a search under FE Talk. Hint: the casting numbers on your block are under your oil filter mount (not the remote, but on the block) on the driver's side;) There's tons of info there on how to decode them. |

The provision for smog under what we call SB-100 (500 slots a year, this years slots were gone in 45 days) allows you to use either the model of the car a a reference i.e. a 1966 Cobra replica is required to have 1966 Cobra smog devices (none) or use the year the engine was constructed if the automobile is something other than a known model. The default year (if the engine year is not able to be determined) is 1960.
In either case you are fine. It was the law (and still is) that you would go to a referee if the engine and chassis are different. In that case an engines year or construction is most often used. Again either way a 67 is fine with no smog other than a PCV valve and an open breather. Most referees are pretty good. The guy I got must have been in the garage too long with my car running. My referee label says my Cobra has a 1960 7 litre (427) Ferrari engine in it. Who am I to say it isn't. |
Actually most all the 1967 Cobras had 428's in them. :)

If I use a early 68 hyd SO block with out casting #'s. Is it considered a 1960 427?
The casting # for the heads are between the #2 & 3 exhaust ports. Which Hi Riser intake do you have? There are 2 different 2 x4 and 1 single 4. The casting #'s for the intakes are C4AE-9425-C for the 64 Thunder Bolt, C4AE-9425-D for the 64 Liteweight Galaxie and C4AE-9425-E for the single 4. Dual four barrel alloy manifold. I understand all high riser heads do not have an exhaust cross over. Nor does my manifold. The front and back four barrels do not share any common area of the plenum. Each carb feeds ONLY four cylinders.

There are some real experts over in the FE forum. They don't check into the general talk forums very often. But, some of these guys can decode anything and tell you exactly where to look. That's how I gathered all the info on mine. |

The C4AE you listed isa date code. 1964 to be exact. The code for the date code for the heads on most FE engines is under the valve covers about mid way of the head. That is where mine are. Ron :rolleyes: |
I figured thats all it was, a date code. I think there must be more numbers somewhere on the heads I've missed. The date code on the intake manifold is also 1964. Rumor has it the block is '66, trying to confirm.
,,,,turned off the rev limiter for "testing". It runs to 7000+ rpm and pulls STRONG! 120 mph in a heart beat! Rev limiter set back to 6000, can't risk hurting the "beast". |
