So Cal front license plate law question....
I was thinking of purchasing a '65 GT350 R style front apron for my mustang.
Do any of you know how the license plate laws work for that type of apron in Los Angeles or the valley? Will I get ticketed and forced to mount a plate? I have heard if it came with a plate in the front you must have one...but what about the modification situation? Any input/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks! |
The California Vehicle Code applies in the entire state. Section 5200 states that if two plates are issued for your vehicle, both must be displayed. Mofdification situation??? It ain't in the code!
Enforcement is up along with redlight cameras and photo radar. |
I thought that 65 Mustangs had a front and back license plates. The ones up here did, and if so, then modifications don't change the law. You will still have to have one.

To clarify, two plates are issued to all automobiles in California. The Vehicle Code reference to two plates if issued is a ditiction between cars and motorcycles.
It doesn't matter if the car wasn't originaly designed for a front plate. By the way, I found a provision in the Wehicle Code that says a plate can't be mounted so it can rotate! Sounds like just ther thing for the flapping front plates on original 427s. |
I have only run a rear plate in CA on most of my cars, and have never once been ticketed for the missing front plate. It helps if you aren't a jackass to the cops howver.

We have cars with and without front plates. Our everyday cars have them because we do not want to be stopped for a minor infraction. We have had two sportscars for twenty years without the front plates but never been stopped. Recently, the LAPD Chief, the guy with the "Bwosten" accent decided to lighten up on traffic tickets to concentrate more on terrorism and heavier crimes, so if you're in the LAPD jurisdiction, chances are that you won't be stopped. However less tickets mean less revenue for the City so who knows how long this will last. The CHP is another story. They are enforcing zero tolerance.
On your GT350 R front apron, you could always mount one to the side of the opening below the bumper (providing you have a front bumper). In any case, carry the unistalled plate in your car. I've been ticketed ($25) twice for this infraction, and across 23 years. Once was parking across the street from Angels Stadium, and the other was at LAX. Avoid big public places where you park the car and you shouldn't have any problems. Most cops have bigger fish to fry....
