SPF help needed:
Greetings fellow Cobraholics: My name is Ted, and I have been Cobra free for several months now. How ever my old boss called and said he had a 9 yr old bottle of SPF with only 497 mi. on the label ! But he needed help to get the thing uncorked ! How could I resist ? Yeah, I'm an addict, like most of you. I've been "Completing" BDR's for about 3 years now, but this is the first SPF I've worked on, and there is a few things I'm having a problem with:
#1. Wouldn't start. Found "duraspark" module potting melted all over pass footwell. New unit fixed problem, but need to get unit out of eng comp, but need to get harness through fire wall to mount unit inside. Can't get to harness from inside due to cowl bar structure. Anyone done this before ? It's on the rt side outbd of the glove box. #2. Clutch pedal is very heavy, and needs to go to the floor to get complete release. It's hyd, & has a slave cly with the # FD 48909 stamped in it. There is no free play at the T.O. brg/ disc fingers, or in the pedal linkage, and there is no lost motion. Slave starts to push as soon as pedal moves. There's a couple of other things, but these are the biggies. Any ideas? TIA Ted |
Ted:
I've had my SPF for 10 years now. I just can't push the clutch down far enough. It must be an SPF thing. There is an adjustment at the clutch pedal. Bob |
Bob: thanks for your reply. Yeah, there are three holes in the bellcrank next to the pedal shaft. Changes the stroke of the master cyl piston. Ours was in the middle, moved it to the bottom hole for more travel at the slave, but at the cost of higher pedal pressure. Hoping that less pedal travel for more slave travel will help. Didn't have time to test drive tonite, and tomorrow looks like rain. Will post results after drive.

Loose the duraspark go with aftermarket MSD or equivalent. Duraspark works great when it works, put they dont seam to last long in spf's and if yours melted there is another issue. So run all new wiring from scratch when you install your aftermarket ignition and you will be done.
My very late chassis has hydraulic clutch and slave works perfect with perfect pedal stroke. You can buy the slave and bracket from cincinatti performance and either reuse the clutch master cylinder or buy a new one, cant cost much. |
make sure you get the password and get on scof tech library, answers with pictures on every issue you could think of.

If you go to the MSD. mount it upside down in the passengers side footwell. Make sure you plug and seal any extra holes so water from the engine compartment can not leak onto the ignition module Craig |
Madmaxx: Thanks for the lead on the clutch slave. I'll look into it. What is "scof", and where do I get the "password"?
Are you refering to "Greater Cincinnati Performance Cars", the Backdraft dealer? Ted |
