California front license plate mounting

Apparently, here in CA we are required to have a plate mounted on the front as well as the rear. Anybody done this? Where to get mounting brackets? Pictures?

Got the Bug 02-17-2010 01:18 PM

Finish Line Accessories sells one that several owners have mounted on SPF cars.

I thought there was another recent thread talking about a front plate bracket, but I can't find it.

Most people aren't running a front plate. But, it's now a pricey ticket if you get stopped by a cop who's having a bad day and decides tag you for it.

BTW - Here's the thread with a picture of Ed's SPF with front plate...don't look at the after picture.

I wouldn't worry about a no-plate on your car matt-patt. Until moving to Washington, all three of my cars never had plates since, like forever while living in the Bay Area. They just look odd on the face of a Cobra.

Ditto, don't have front plates on any of my cars. In CA it's a "fix-it" ticket.
Wouldn't worry about it.

It's not a "fix it" ticket in CA anymore. I don't have the exact fine, but off the top of my head it's something like $100. They probably won't stop you just for that, but a cop having a bad day would be happy to add it to your tab if say you get pulled over for speeding. **)

According to this source, no front plate (Vehicle code 4457) is still a fix-it ticket.

Funny story: I got a no front plate ticket a number of years ago. Hung the plate and went to the Sheriff's station. Sheriff asked if I now had a front plate - said yes - asked if the car was here - said yes - he signed my ticket without even looking out the window. Must have figured nobody would be dumb enough to call his bluff!

Front plates is a BS thing so they can stop you and collect money.

The rodders sell folding plate kits

mattpatt If you goggle fold plate kits you will find them for about $300.00 dollars. The are electric controlled and fold back and down when needed. Location would be in the radiator opening. Cop pulls you over and flip it up, no ticket, just poor eyes unless you are on video. Rick L.

Here in AZ I got two plates for the Cobra, but only one plate for the other cars I own. Hmmmm! There is no requirement for running a front plate here.
I've had the cobra in California several times (no front plate)...never stopped.

Bill

It's been a while since I lived in CA, but if I recall correctly you do not need to have a front plate as long as the car was not originally designed to have one mounted...may want to look into the law and see if this is still current. It was a rare exception, but I remember this was true back in the day.

I use to have a spring operated license plate holder on my miata. At about twenty miles per hour it woud roll back to the horizonal position then spring back to the upright upon stopping. Cost about nineteen dollars from one of the miata junk sales places. Worked real well.

I have got tickets for not having a front plate, and also having tinted windows, they were not fix it tickets, and if you carry a commercial drivers license there is no traffic school option either. Both the san jose pd and the calif hwy patrol verified this, maybe I should have gone to the sherrifs office lol.

Pike 02-18-2010 01:36 PM

Absolutely compulsory in Ireland as well as in all other countries in Europe. I am using the s/s plate holder from Finish Line and I reckon it doesn't look too bad:

Ok, it'll be a bit nicer with no plate, but have to live with it :MECOOL:

The story behind the story (NTSF data, Feb 8, 2010).

For 2009 in total, CA front plate tickets were up 47%, 58% in LA county alone, which added $4.7 million to the county coffers.....and any other county and city that has authorized "photo enforcement of red light violations".

It needs to see your front plate to send you the ticket. Check the county and city you drive in the most and you will have some feeling for where you stand.

Wayne in Gilroy, CA (a photo red light district, like any red light district full of @#$%& wanting your money).

I've had 3 warnings for not having one in NY, so I decided to live with having one...

CT requires a front plate. When there are multiple motor vehicle charges along with drug/liquor charges along with a no front license plate charge , could be the absence of the plate might have been used as probable cause for the traffic stop, which opens the door.

legenmetals 02-19-2010 08:36 PM

I don't have one,its my little way of fighting back.

timsullivan 02-19-2010 08:58 PM

Most SoCal cruisiers run without a front plate...

No front plate on my Cobra or for that matter my other two family cars. Screw the 'coppers. If they bust me with a fix it ticket I'll deal with it then....
