over heating, fans not coming on!
my brothers car started to over heat due to the cooling fans not turning on, he has an older car with out the over ride switch on the dash... what would be the first steps in tracking down the problem? where to look first? fuses / relays/ wiring?
any info would be great

One of the two fans stopped working on my car. Swapped the relay from the good fan to the bad, and it started working again. Replaced both relays to be safe.

where are the relays located?

I had a fan stop and it was just a loose wire. It was still in place, just not far enough in to be engaged.

The relays should be located under the dash to the left of the steering column.

Same thing happened to me. I pushed it back on and haven't had any problems since. |
Older cars have only one fan relay...what is his car number?
Has he replaced his relay?
Can he make both fans work with a jumper across the temp switch on the lower left side if the radiator?
Do this first to isolate the problem.

Have him put his hand close to the radiator after warming up the car and feel for heat. If hot, then he has a fan problem. If cool, then he has a thermostat problem.

The relays in these things run hot for the fans.
-- so a periodic replacement is not out of the question.

if they are 30 amp, you can replace them with 50 amp. |

There are 70A aircon relays as well, but then I would wonder about the capability of the wire to transport the amps.
40a each would be my comfort level, the other considersation would be the fans themselves. Are the fan motors aged, corroded or damaged in such a way where they take more juice to operate ?
If they don't spin freely by hand you may have a fan motor issue
