SPF MK II 289 "FIA" at Watkins Glen
2 Attachment(s)
As part of the Vintage weekend last week, Watkins Glen (the village, not the race track) holds a real party. On Friday all track entries are invited down to Franklin Street (the main drag) for a display. This involves driving the 4 miles plus from the track to town....open piped, no plates and all! Everything from formula cars to Can Am cars do it.
After a nice show on Franklin, visits to the food vendors and others passtimes, the main event happens......two laps of the original 6.6 mile public roads Grand Prix track as per circa 1950. Trust me, these guys had stones. You go over a stone bridge at a turn, over a railroad crossing, up and down and all over! While the laps are "paced" by a pace car, we did hit triple digits more than once. Ross had fitted the USRRC windscreen so there was no protection for me. The Corvette ahead was on slicks so I got a real sandblasting.....we quickly learned to add some distance. The Superformance ran great and handles fabulously. Light and direct. Don't believe what you have heard about the transverse leaf spring chassis, it does work well and feels lighter than the MK III/427 does. All in all, a real blast! |
