SB 100's STILL AVAILABLE

Applied for SB 100 on Feburary 16th with all the paperwork in hand at my local DMV office. Manager there got on the phone and I was given #148! Had to wait for the Certificate to be sent from Sacramento before I could go to the BAR referee. Lady at DMV office said it should arrive in about 3 weeks. It arrived in one week!! Made appointment with BAR, went there on the 28th, and on Feb 28th, SB 100 is now affixed to my car. Who would have guessed??:MECOOL::LOL:

This is the second, or is it third, year that the "word on the street" was that they all were gone in the first few hours of the first business day after the first of the year. It seems that demand is waning. Is that because the system has caught up with the backlog? I can see the state's reluctance to add more if the current supply isn't used until very near the end of the year (as was the case in 2010).

Does anyone know how the SB100's are being used? Are they got to rat rods, Cobras, or what?

Suspect it Reflects State of CA Economy

Just a guess, but given that we (CA) are still very much feeling the impact of the poor economy (not all sectors, but many), continued availability of SB100 perhaps an indicator of less disposable income dedicated to the building of toys.

SB100 is required for any specialty constructed vehicle meant for road use in CA; kit cars, hot rods (with some exceptions I believe depending on engine used), etc.

Perhaps its not only a reflection of the economy and less people building new cars, but maybe an indication that some are finding good deals on pre-owned SPCNS/SB100 cars instead. It would be an interesting to see some DMV "title transfers" data this year vs. prior years when new SB100 numbers were gold.

Would one need to live in the US or CA to get SB100 certification for ones "kit car" or...
Could someone from out of CA purchase it for their car, just in case they were planing to sell their car to another in CA at a future date.

Kind regards,

No, SB100s are not for sale. They are free. It is a registration process, requiring the car to be present in California and visually inspected by the California Bureau of Automotive Repair.
