Trouble with Zerk Grease Fittings

I feel like a real idiot. With my skills, I could never build one of these fine racing machines. I thought I would replace a couple of the grease fittings on my SPF as some of them wouldn't accept any grease. I start unscrewing the Zerk and after awhile I realize I've stopped making progress! There is a base that is spinning around with the grease fitting. Doesn't look like there is anything to grab onto the base. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? Thanks!

There are tapered and straight threads for the grease fittings. They are a fine thread (1/4-28) that strip easily or you may have a tapered in a parallel hole. Can you get some small vice grips to hold the hex base and pull it out at the same time you turn it?

Suggestion:

See if you get get a small screwdriver under the lip of the flats below your wrench as you turn...use it as a lever (go easy) to give some 'push' to the zerk as you turn it out. That might be enough for it to grab enough to back out.

When you get it out, make sure you clean out all of the shavings of the stripped threads. I usually use a compressed air gun with a very small tube to get behind the threads and push the shards out.

I don't know how the threads got stripped. I've stripped PLENTY of threads in my day, but I did not strip this one. OK, I've never stripped threads removing the bolt/screw and how exactly did I do that? I don't understand the configuration of the grease fitting, the ring that is going with the fitting and the ball joint. Hey, now maybe I HAVE to get them fancy new super smooth ball joints! Thanks for the help.

Those new ball joints are nice. I just installed a set for a customer. Be careful with the threads on those where they screw into the ends of the arms! They are sloppy engagement and thread profile.

Aren't there also press fit zerks factory installed on the part?
