shifter boot replacement
Has anybody changed out their shifter boot? I have a new one from Finish Line that I want to install, but looking at the situation this AM, it appears that I need to remove the whole shifter from the transmission, as the phony reverse lockout doesn't want to move and let me slid the old boot off and replace with the new. Any suggestions?
Thanks, TL |
Undo the bottom of the boot and ring, lift it and unbolt the shift handle from the shifter assembly. On TKOs the lever will unbolt. The handle is usually afixed with a Torx head bolt.

Un screw the shifter knob, there is a set screw down the center holding the fake reverse lock out.

Got-r-done
Thanks guys,
It was easier than I thought. The set screw takes a 5/32" allen wrench. The new boot has depressions for the screws that hold the finish ring in place = I drilled mine out so to line up with the existing holes in the car. Blas, Thanks for the PM; we went out for dinner and didn't get back until late. This is why Club Cobra is So Great! :) TL |
Where did you get the shifter boot. Mine has a slight tear in it

Try Hillbank, Finishline, Cobra Restorers...

I replaced the rubber shifter boot on my SPF last year. For about a month afterwards, the rubber was so stiff that it would occasionally pop the shifter out of 3rd gear. It eventually softened up and the problem has since gone away, but be prepared for this when you're done.

Mine's still doing that after 3 years, mostly on the over-run. :(

If your shifter is popping out of gear; you might want to try and flatten the boot down a bit. Once it gets past the bend in the shift handle, it should not be a problem. Having said that, I haven't driven my car since installing the new boot. %/

Shifter Boot (FORD #C2AZ-7277-A)
1962 1963 Ford Galaxie and Full Size Models 1962 1963 1964 Ford Falcon Ford Shift Boot, Falcon, Fairlane, Galaxie, Ranchero, 1962-1968 - Ford Parts $24.95 When replacing the boot you can sometimes make a little adjustment to the location of the trim ring by making new holes in the tunnel. This will move the boot so equal pressure is exerted on the shifter. I've seen a few tunnels with the shifter hole seriously offset position from the actual shifter. Centered is the prefered installation, with equal rubber boot resistance in the forward and reward gear positions. The alternative is the leather or NOMEX shifter boots if you offset is extreme...... |
Does anyone reproduce the shifter boot without the mold line on top?
