Superformance steering column play
Replaced upper and lower steering column bearings, hoping to eliminate play in the steering column. No improvement. Replaced the spring behind the wheel. Problem solved.
The new spring is taller, indicating that the old spring had collapsed down a bit. The angular ball bearings require that they be preloaded by the spring. No preload and the column would rock up and down.

Any info on the replacement spring? Source, part number, etc?

Exactly what symptoms were you experiencing? Wheel shimmy? Slop in the steering when going over bumps in the road? Loose steering? Disconnected feeling?
Please explain.

Steering shaft would rock in the column. Grab and pull up on either the wheel or shaft coming out the column bottom. Could hear and see the rocking.

Did you check to see if the ball bearings and sleeves supporting the internal steering shaft were in order? You implied your steering wheel moved up and down, this could also be related to the loose ball bearings at each end...

Both old and new bearings were in perfert order. These column ball bearings are an angular design and have slop in them unless an axial preload is placed on them. Check it out by pulling your steering wheel off, which will unload the spring. Push the steering shaft up toward the windshield and down to the floor.
