Fuel gage error
I have a stock SP MK3 (3033). The fuel gage reads really high (shows ~3/4 full when it's reall half full). I ran out of gas once when it showed 1/2 full. Is there any way to adjust it to read correctly?
thx Matt |
....I had the same problem with SPO2089. My car has a float system. The float and sending unit is easy to access in the trunk, pull up the rug and you'll see where it can be removed. Once the sending unit is removed, just a matter of, by trial, bending the steel rod that supports the float until it reads correctly. Being 'out of gas adverse', I also watch the odometer.
There are other threads on this forum which deal with the same subject. If this simple fix doesnt work, then you might look into other causes, or assuming you bought it there, call Hillbank in Irvine, might still be under warranty.. Good luck. Bob |

Have had the same problem with #158 & 884, the fix was simple. You can do as Bob said, but you may want to do one other thing. I unhooked the fuel line turned on the fuel pump and drained it into a can. When the pump stoped pumping then I knew my true empty. Went to the gas stationed and bought 5 Gals, put it into the tank and set the fuel gauge to read 1/4. Remember its not how much gas you have its how much you have left. Remember to hook your fuel line back up before turning on the key. Fred |
Thanks guys,
I made the adjustment as Bob recommened (easy!). And I'll also do as you suggest, Fred. You're right - it's what's left that counts! Matt |
I just get gas every 150 miles...that is about a day's drive for me anyway..

How much you have left does count. The first half of the tank holds more and takes longer to use the the second half of the tank. I drained mine till it had half a tank. I measured it with a tape measure once I removed the sending unit. Then I bent the float rod till it read 1/2 tank. Simple except remembering the second half goes faster!!

Yes. The second half goes quick. I think it is the shape of the tank? Mine reads high also.
I get nervous when it hits a quarter....Generally, when it hits half I fill it back up. Running out of gas is really embarrasing LOL, I know Doh :) |
Just remember...a Cobra will pass anything on the road EXCEPT a gas station!!!!!I have learned that when my car hits close to a quarter of a tank I fill up at the next station I come to....I ran on fumes and coasted down a hill into a gas station ONCE...I figure I was lucky...that was the last time I ever let the gague read less than 1/4.
