ignition switch assembly

My ignition switch assembly continues to loosens/turns clockwise when I start the car. I have held the assembly under the dashboard and hand tightened the knurled retainer around the key slot, but the problem comes back. I don't want to overtighten the knurled retainer in fear that it will cut into the dashboard covering creating more problems. I was thinking of installing a "comfort access" type of key ala BMW that you keep in your pocket with a push button starter that is activated when you sit in the car thus eliminating the ignition key starter. Experience/comments?

Take the retainer off and drop the ignition switch out of the dash. There is usually an adjuster (nut) on the back that will allow you set the depth for the thickness of the dash. If that's too far in the outer will bottom out without it clamping down on the dash.

My Superformance had the same issue when I purchased it. All I did was grab the channelocks, hold the switch behind the dash with one hand, and gently tighten the nut------being careful not to twist or curl the dash material----with the other hand. That was 3 1/2 years ago. Haven't experienced any further issues.

Thanks all.

you may want to also find a large gated washer to add traction back there. try not to use glue or anything like that -- that can really mess things up.
