Rev Limiter

What is the simplest way to add a rev limiter to my Superformance? Current ignition is Motorcraft® Ignition Module, OEM Part Number(s): 1U2Z12A199AA. Engine is KC 408.

thanks,

Bob

Check Jegs or Summit. They both should carry an adjustable REV limiter. Jegs now has shipping included in their price.

For the price, wouldn’t it be easier to just replace the current ignition (Motorcraft®) with an MSD 6AL ignition with a built in rev limiter? I have one of those on the shelf.

Any recommended online tutorials showing a 6AL installation on an "old school" engine such as a KC 408? Electricity is not my friend.

I believe the 6AL install is pretty straightforward with just power connections and distributor pickup along with tach output for tach. I have an MSD ignition with MSD coil and dist so cant say how it would connect with mixed parts.

I use an original 65 FoMoCo Dist. with Pertronics stater replacing the original points and a MSD 6AL box for adjustable rev limit control. I have it set @ 7k for street use. No problems here.

Thanks for the feedback. Just picked up an MSD blaster high vibration coil (8222) to go with the MSD 6AL (6425). Will install both once I get my BMW 1200 GS back together and out of the way. Too many projects.

Bob,

Some of this may be preference, and some just to keep things neater and cooler. I have the blaster coil which is mounted on the inner left wheel well off the engine, and the 6AL box is mounted on top of the tunnel under the dash inside the car. You can see it if you stand behind the car. Since it is red, and my stripes are red it is no big deal. I bought my car this way. I think a lot of guys install the box under the dash in the foot well area on the passenger side. It stays cooler in the car. I had to replace the 6AL box after 38,000 miles.

Passenger footwell area is a good mount location for the box. Mount the coil on the wheel well area.

Voyager 01-17-2014 01:11 PM

Yeah. I intend to mount the 6AL where the current ignition is (inside cockpit, up under passenger footwell). Current coil is bolted directly to the front of the block next to the distributer. I’ll snoop around for a less “hostile” place.
