OK, put it another way - id appreciate any pics of rear wheels shod with Avons, and a note of the tyre size! thanks, Kevin

The first picture I posted is the standard Trigo wheel with 295/50-15 Avons.

Here is another picture for you.

Personal opinion is go with the 295's.

I pretty much have since I no longer have a Cobra. :(

Sometimes I will lurk and if I feel I can help someone out with a question I will try to help.

Naaah, you and Chas are smart enough to answer stuff around here even without your Cobras in the garage....

Hi Kev,

I'm planning on buying a set this week and wondered if you were interested in seeing if we could get a better deal for two sets. I had a quote from BMTR yesterday for £1,200 inc. VAT for 245/60 fronts and 295/50 rears.

Paul

KevinW 03-23-2014 09:24 AM

Thanks Paul, but im putting off buying rubber till im ready to put the trigos on....not for a while yet. Im also still wondering about sizes.....

I think Dingo tried to get a discount a year or 2 ago, and it was about £20 off was best he could get. Reckon BMTR know that everyone loves these tyres, and they'll buy'em regardless. But let me know how you get on.

Got your pm on the puke tank - my nil response was because i was trying to find the receipt for it (failed so far)...i know it was damned expensive, but i guess im open to an offer, if you're still interested.

Kevin - if you check out Allen's 289FIA thread...
http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/era-...-2124-a-3.html
...on page 3, posts 33 to 43, there are shots of 275/60-15 and 245/60-15 tyres, unmounted and mounted. They are MTs, but an appearance comparison with the 295/50 Avons is probably valid.
Cheers,
Glen

Just wanted to post the result of my purchase in question.

The Avons 295 and 245 fit perfect, look and feel awesome. I raised to front to the recommended SCOF measurement and she looks a bit high in the front. Also the wheels seem to have an almost positive camber - I guess, I need to work on that.

I do get a wobble at around 60mph, however the tires are balanced perfect but she still feels "loose" unless you are in a turn.

Thanks for your input and valuable advice.

Jürgen

If you go to SCOF and look you will find that the isolated "wobble" is something they think is related to a suspension piece. I forget just what it is. I don't seem to have a problem on my car. You could raise the front end and spin the wheels to see if there is run-out or an out of round condition. I suspect the answer is on SCOF and it is not the tires or wheels. Positive camber does not sound right nor inviting. Are you at the limits of alignment adjustment after raising? Did you raise as a part of corner loading? My AVONs balanced easily, ran true and the difference in wear was 1/10 mm across the tread. Close to perfect. Olthoff aligned it and I have not touched it in 35k miles. Maybe more. I have a Smiths speedo. Smile. Actually it works---good enough.

My new set of AVONs is in the garage sitting on the trailer until I pull the wheels. Please let us know what you find.

To add to the tire equation here are pictures taken today of an Avon CR6ZZ 295/50x15 vs. Mickey Thompson "S/R" tires in sizes 28x12/15 and 26x12-15 for comparison.

To my eyes the 26's are just a bit too short and the 28's are perhaps a bit too tall, but I prefer the 28s.

We have several customers running these and they are happy. In a 15" NOTHING beats the Avons, but for 1/2 the cost the MTs look pretty good!

FatBoy 04-02-2014 03:26 PM

I've just fitted Avons to my Kirkham in 245 front and 295 rear sizes:

Whilst they don't look quite as good as the Goodyear, they are much nicer to drive on.

What size would the Mickeys be for the front. 255/60/15?

If you are using the S/T tires yes, if the SR's you use 10/26-15 SRs. Buddy, do yourself a favor and keep that pretty wife from being a widow and get rid of the Goodrich TAs!!!!!

buddyg 04-02-2014 06:32 PM

Why can't they just use normal sizes! So my 295/50/15 would be 28x12 and my 255/60/15 would be 26x10?

Mark IV 04-02-2014 06:34 PM

Like, yeah! You are dealing with the "old" tire sizing system still used for race tires as opposed to the newer "P metric" size system.

28" tall by 12" wide with a 15" rim...

Hey! Those MT S/R's look good.
Any chance of getting a photo of them on a SPF?

I started with BFG when I got my SPF and thought my 351 had all kinds of power - I could spin the BFG at 55mph (later found out it was not excess power, but hard tires!). After my second set of rear BFG tires, I went to Yokohama Avid S/T, and was very happy with them. And BTW, the Avid S/T aren't too bad in the snow, either. Wore 2 sets out, and my third set was getting old, so time for a new set of tires.

I think I'm gonna like the MT S/R tires...
Jim

887 is getting new shoes as we speak. The 28's on hand are from Mike, they were for the Bullitt clone he built for a customer but were just a little too big for the Mustang so they ended up in my inventory.....

The MT S/Rs will never see snow I assume?

Avon

Front AV11224 - 245/60VR15 CR6ZZ - 317.00 each
Rear AV13212M - 295/50VR15 CR6ZZ - 373.00 each

I was having problems with wheel slip when shifting gears. The Avons solved that problem but they pickup everything and I have to sweep the garage more often.:JEKYLHYDE

AVON front = 205 70 15
AVON rear = 245 60 15
