How hard is it to put the top on?
I've had 3 SPF's and have never put my top on. How hard is it and how long does it take? Anyone have step by step directions?

Buddy,
PM me, I will send you the manual. Not hard, just a frustrating when it is wet or cold. I can do a top in about three minutes.....when the top material is warm and supple...at 30 degrees it is another story!

Only if Warm/Dry are factors!

You could always have a beautiful female wrap herself around you :D I would suggest, and Rick gave this same advice to me, that you take the top inside for a few hours to let it warm up before attempting to put the top on. They are harder to stretch when cold.

If you are anal about the paint be careful the top will flap around at speed and hit the paint.

I have a Backdraft and install the top early November. I also have a heater and with both it helps keep the cockpit warmer but the windows let in a strong breeze that keeps you aware that it's cold outside. A heavy jacket and gloves are a must.

I put my top on all the time. I put a strip of clear bra where the top sits on the paint. Cheep insurance for the paint. the heater works good but the top leaks cold air around the sides. It is awesome though. Its like a whole other car. Out in Arizona I get to drive year round.:D

7 years later and mine is still in the bag that in came in. My guess is that it'll probably start to degrade at some point.

Mark IV.
If you could be so kind as to share that same information with me it would be much appreciated. I am ordering the owners manual in the next couple of days but will not see it for some time I suspect.
I have sent you a PM....thanks in advance

Helped a friend with an SPF put his top on for the first time and, even without instructions, it wasn't hard to do. SPF does a good job with their tops and side curtains and the fit is pretty good.
I would advise doing it in the garage a couple of times so you get used to any quirks with your unit under good conditions. After that it should be a breeze.
Practice getting in and out over the pipes several times once the top is on for the first time. You might have to do some creative body folding but you'll get used to it.
The cars do have a different look with the top on. From some angles it looks even meaner.

With a little effort the soft top can be made pretty weather proof. And it is like having a completely different car.

I open the drivers door and crawl across to the passenger side then reverse myself into the drivers seat. I wouldn't advise doing that with a passenger unless you're really good friends with them, really you don't want to do this when anyone can see you.

I've been doing that same crawl for a month now! My top is 22 years old, ripped and held together with Gorilla tape but still gives me another month to drive and lets the heater actually heat things up a bit. I'll probably bite the bullet and have a new one made next year.
