Heat Shields
I was wondering if heat shields need to be added to an FE Superformance MKIII? If so where? I am bored waiting and these questions keep me amused.

Nice one, :eek: looks kind of familiar to the two that I have received. Thankfully Dr. Muck was there to help bandage me, and despite his efforts amazingly my leg did not have to be amputated!

Just learn to step out and over, it will only take one snake bite to remember. I don't like the looks of heat shields.

Usually, one only burns themselves once though!

Bill,
This won't help you if you absent-mindedly step out of the car and touch the pipe, but for my passengers that I think might have a difficult time getting in or out of the car, I made roll-out heat shields out of welder's blanket and installed them in the door sill with a couple of snaps. They just roll up out of the way tucked between the seat and sill when not in use. Others have done this as well - I got the idea on this forum.

Usually that is the case %/ Mine were both on the same day and involved looking into the engine compartment after a test drive! That 427 just looked so attractive :LOL:
I do agree that the heat shields do alter the look. The use of a welders mat over the side pipes seems to be a more favorable adjustment. |

I haven't burned my leg in a few years now. But there for a while, I had some pretty good burns. But, it got to the point where I could yank my leg off the pipe quick enough so that it would only be a "sunburn" type of injury, and not a third-degree-er. What I really hated though was that skin and sinew stains were left on the side pipes. I found that 409 cleaner worked wonders for removing parts of me from the ceramic coating. That's my tip for the day.:cool:

I don't like the look of the heat shields either, but don't like the look of scars on my passengers even more!
First year my 80 year old dad burnt his leg (didn't tell me for months) and my nephew did (even after I warned both of them repeatedly).
I installed heat shields last year and no one burnt their legs ;)

Thank you, another fine example of Obamacare! I told you then that amputation would have been an extra two bucks.
I have found most snakebites occur not in exiting but after when people turn to open the hood, spectators crowding up to the car to peer in, etc. |

Your legs will still get burned with the heat shields. My daughters did. The clamps that hold them on a right about where you step out so it transfers the heat right to the shield. I bought my car used and was going to just remove them, but the clamps corroded the pipes, so I left them on. When you get out of the car, you should push up on the back of the seat and get out kinda standing, not sitting!! All my passengers do the same with no problem. The only time I got burned was looking under the hood after having some engine probs!! Only took once!!

Bill,
The SPF comes with insulation as well as "stand-off" shields in the engine compartment that really reduce transference of the BTUs your FE will put out. In normal temps (80-85 degrees) you will have no real heat entry unless you idle excessively. When moving NO heat problems. |
