main Relay Shield?
I've inadvertently made brief contact with the hot leads on the main relay mounted on the firewall while doing various chores: I know the solution is to switch off in the trunk, but sometimes things are done with the engine on.
Is there,or is there supposed to be a cover over the thing??

I'm assuming you're talking about the starter solenoid on the firewall. That style solenoid has been used on numerous vehicles for many years and of all that I have seen and personally owned, none have had a cover.

You can purchase covers for the large cables. And the part in question is called a solenoid not a relay. Similar in function.
