Been lurking for a year and finally made the move to join. Current owner of SPO 2811, a WA state car that has been on this site several times since its birthday in 2008. I've owned it for just over a year. Always wanted one was not disappointed when I found the right one. Gonna try to post a pic. Hopefully the original owner will see it too.

That is a very nice Cobra. Is the Mustang yours too?

Ron :)

Installed my new MT Street drag radials today. Love the look. Took em for a short drive and didn't seem to have any negative issues. Wind was blowing at about 30 mph with a dust storm so really didn't feel like being out in it for long. Going back to the drags in a week or two. We'll see what the ET difference between them and the BFG Radial TA's with no other changes made.

Suggest you start researching rear axle options in your spare time here on CC. You will be replacing them before too long. Drag radials and hard launches are known to snap axles.

I had half-shafts made at thedriveshaftshop.com. They were very nice, but a bit pricey. They have the measurements on-file to do rear axle (half shafts) and main prop shafts, so you can order direct without sending in your old stuff or taking measurements.

I felt the service was great and the product was superior. About 2x beefier than stock as I opted for the 900hp versions (you'll add a bit of weight). My only issue was the main locking retaining nut they shipped with did not fit under the wheel adapter on SPO-408, so I had to go with a different retaining nut with a smaller shoulder (check the clearance before you use their retaining nut). Other than that it's a drop-in replacement and I've had zero issues with them in the last 3 years.

Dan, how big of a job is it to replace an axle? What all has to come apart?

CHRIS DAMSCH 08-31-2015 08:34 PM

Drove with drag radials for many thousands of miles an never broke a half shaft.

Btw, it is one of the least expensive of items that could break (rearend, trans, etc)

It wasn't that hard...I think I only had to remove the lower knuckle bolts and the shock...maybe a few other things, but taking the whole rear suspension apart isn't that hard really. I guess it helps that I have a 1" impact wrench to get the retaining nut off/on easily. :)

I think I got both sides in by myself in maybe 3 hours. There's a lot of room to work (compared to other cars) and the suspension isn't that complicated.

Remember that (at least for the early models like mine) the shafts were two different lengths (very subtle difference). Make sure you get the correct one in on the correct side or it won't go back together. Oh, and don't forget to get the proper retaining nut as I mentioned above.

You'll want to get it re-aligned once you are done. I marked all my bolts, but it was still off when it all got back together, so I took it in for a 4 wheel alignment.

Consider safety wiring in those lower suspension bolts when you're done, especially the inner pivot bolts. I had one back out partially and break...not pretty.

The MT drag radials were awesome. Felt so much "safer" on the track. Car felt glued to the 1/4 mile. Tires alone made an almost .6 sec deduction in 1/4 mile time. No burn off, 20 lbs pressure. Left at 2000 rpm. Dropped timing from 38 to 32 and gained 1 mph but can't fully put that 1 mph on the timing change.

DWRAT 09-20-2015 02:29 PM

What were the 1/4 mile times & speeds?
Why did you change your timing, just trying different things?

Brdslayr 09-20-2015 04:45 PM

Kinda showin all my cards if I let loose my qtr mile times, but what the heck I'm among friends. Right? 12.266 @ 111.28. Dropped the timing just to see what the result would be. Actually thought I'd go slower. Not sure where the optimum should be. Ford Motorsport 351 385hp. Opinions?

DWRAT 09-20-2015 05:00 PM

Nice numbers for sure.
I also backed my timing back because I got a bad batch of fuel and it pulls better with lower timing.

1985 CCX 09-20-2015 05:02 PM

Welcome. Car looks great.

Welcome to the forum.

Cheers,
Glen

The drag radial look great. Did you put them on all four corners? What size did you go with? Also sent you a PM regarding the tires.

Brdslayr 09-21-2015 07:05 PM

Just put them on the back. Went with the 275/60/15. Still not sure what I am gonna finally do with tires. Buy an extra pair of wheels and put the BFG's that I took off on those. Buy and extra pair of wheels and 4 new tires replacing the BFG's and still have the drag radials mounted on their own. Or just leave it as is for now and run the BFG's on the front and drag radials on the back. Leaning toward another pair of wheels.
