Odometer repair
My odometer quit on me today.
I tore it apart and it appears to be a super easy fix if I can find a new gear. Here's a few pictures for anyone who has the same problem. Contact Cobra Valley. They have a brass gear to replace the cheap plastic. Much cheaper than Nisonger. You can do it yourself.

The speedometer odo is all back together and working like new.
A big thanks to "MEATMASTER" for the PM on who sells them. It was a super easy repair other then dealing with very small parts. |
There is a Smiths repair shop in Tempe on Mccklintock and mckellips, don't know name but they repaired my smiths tach once

I replaced the gear with one bought at Cobra Valley. I believe it was also like the plastic one that broke and not brass. Getting the new gear into the slot was the hardest part of the job. As I have been told, do not touch the trip reset. The odometer works perfectly now; I keep praying. Good luck.

What about "don't touch the trip reset"? What do I need to know? I always zero mine at fill up. Am I playing with fire or is that plastic?

I'd say not to reset while vehicle is in motion. That was sure a no no with 944 Porsche. Strip odometer gears. Least it did on mine and others I'd heard of. Repair shop wouldn't sale me the .75 cent gear. Take it out, and to the shop. 15 min. and $125 they hand it back to me.
And a few years later,(I wasn't thinking) and hit the reset on 92 Isuzu trooper while in motion. Not as bad though, work a couple miles and stop, couple and stop. Never had this one repaired though. |
Thanks for this thread. Mine stopped at 20,000 miles and then restarted about 50 miles later all by itself. Glad to know it's fixable.

My speedo has 13,000 on it and the only issue I have is the speedometer floats almost like it's in a liquid gauge. I think this may be related to the speedo cable having a kink in it or not being ran the best position. I also check my mileage and reset my odmeter at every flll up. I've noticed that my odometer also turns a little more mileage than it suppose to. My car had a gear swap to 3:31's or 3"27's and I bet they didn't make the speedo gear change. Just a few more of the small things I will be correcting over the summer. DWRAT what do you think?

You can use a GPS to check the odometer on longer trip. I checked the B&B last summer on the return trip from the London Cobra Show and found it was 1/2% off. Changed the trannie gear and now it "almost" perfect.
I use an app on my cell to check speedometers. |
